WillParker   0 #1 Posted May 7, 2019 I work as a Cardiology Doctor at the Northern General Hospital and Sheffield University, but am also studying for a Diploma in the History of Medicine.  I am researching the life and work of Mr Judson Chesterman, who was a surgeon specialising in chest and heart surgery at the City General Hospital (now Northern General) from the 1940s to the 1970s . He was quite a remarkable character, making several important advances such as performing the first operation in the world to replace the mitral heart valve in 1955, and also  being the first to use a heart-lung machine in Europe, all done here in Sheffield.  I would love to hear from anyone with memories of him or any information generally relating to heart surgery in Sheffield during this period.
