It is a bit of a mystery like "how did Dave Allen lose that finger?". lol. I do remember talking to some Liverpool supporters while on holiday in Blackpool and they all believed it was about Tommy Smith and the toughness of the Shankly team in general. In fact, the reason the topic came up was because they had been singing it in the Manchester Hotel most of the night. Perhaps as Runningman said, they did eventually call him the Anfield Iron, but I bet that song had something to do with it, based on what those guys we met, told us.
