Electoral reform

Recommended Posts

After over two and a half years, our elected officials have failed to make anything of the brexit vote. Regardless of how you voted or your political affiliation you can’t help but look at our MPs and not think “what a shambles”. And they have been paid - not including expenses - at £77k a year. Are we getting anything for our money? If brexit is anything to go by, no we aren’t.

Brexit was, apparently, not just a call to leave the EU but a rallying call to the establishment that we aren’t happy. Fair enough. But what did we learn anything from that? No we didn’t. 70 seats changed hands at the last election, down from last time out.

I bet the establishment were quaking in their boots. Reform was mentioned, then thrown under the big red brexit bus. It won’t happen, unless it’s forced. So next election, vote for the opposition. It doesn’t matter if they’re labour and you vote Tory - party lines mean next to **** all anyway. Or vote green, vote UKIP. Just make sure the current useless incumbent is clearing their desk out after the next election. They don’t deserve our votes, and they won’t change.

Time to rid the country of the established parties.

Is the chaos of the last two and a half years down to a 'broken' political system or because both parties promised something that was virtually impossible and which didn't have the support of the country?

It's down to, too comfortable with feet under the table/snouts in  trough, and a lack of respect for the voting public.

After the dust settles on this mess two things need to happen. We need a judicial inquiry into everything behind the referendum, the electoral fraud and the actions of the Government over the past three years and we need to start the process, involving every political party, independent experts and the public, of writing a formal written constitution with binding rules on how the Executive are allowed to act and with oversight etc. Brexit has killed the credibility of our political system stone dead. No single party should ever be allowed to decide the future of everyone on things of this magnitude. They should be required to carry the support of a clear majority of all eligible voters in order to force them to compromise rather than use us all as party political playthings. It's time to leave behind the ancient traditions and nonsense and join the rest of the democratic world in the 21st century.

That is an absolute necessity!

It is all very well having quaint traditional practices and procedures written literally centuries ago and can stil have all the pomp and ceremony, Black Rod, the speaker shouting Order! Order! etc but the rules and procedures need bringing completely up to date.

We've certainly seen how an 'unwritten' constitution, relying on all parties acting with good faith and within established norms of decorum, has been destroyed by politicians willing to do anything to win.

Oh, and a third thing that needs to happen is the Electoral Commission needs to be given serious teeth, up to and including being able to put people in prison for the most serious criminal attacks on democracy. At present even their maximum fine won't put off the people who have been flooding dark money in to try and change results. If they're spending sums of the same amount or more just on buying Facebook adverts then they're just going to consider any pitiful fine they receive as a cost of business.

I agree, I wont be voting for any of the traditional, or ukip, or the new independent group.

Something needs to change this time.

Maybe a bright new Tory leader will spot that the time is right and start to rid us of first past the post; they got brownie points for bringing gay marriage, before some were ready for it.

While we are giving them all a kicking let's not forgot that the SNP and the Lib Dems are absolutely acting in the interests of their constituents.

The main parties would regard electoral reform like turkeys voting for Christmas.

The Tories under Cameron were able to finesse Clegg’s Lib Dems and avoid real electoral reform.

Unfortunately he then misjudged a disenchanted electorate when trying to do the same to the eurosceptic arm of his party, and we are now in the current mess.
