Has anyone got a revox or similar tape machine?

Recommended Posts

A record company would like to use a track from my old band Typhoon Saturday on a compilation of 80s Sheffield bands - I'm struggling to find someone who can help me digitise an old band demo which is on a 10.5" reel....

Any leads much appreciated.

Is it a standard 1/2" wide 7.5"/s single play open reel tape?

I know someone who still had a Revox B77 a few years ago and will check to see if she still has it.

Won't the label arrange for it to be transferred?

I transfer tapes for customers in all formats, from the BBC archive down to individual tapes. Please give me details on track format, speed and duration. I can provide CD version of lossless audio cloud streaming or download versions

I think you meant 1/4" tape. Might have been recorded on a Revox A77, perhaps at 15 ips, either 1/4 or 1/2 track. I had one of these but sold it last year, still have 3 others though.

Yes, I did mean 1/4". 👍

Can you remember what it was recorded on?

Sometimes people used the domestic 4 track format so you'd have 2 separate channels, 1&3, 2&4.

If it was done in one of the old studios in Sheffield then chances are it'll be on Revox, I have A&B77s and PR99 together with an old domestic Pioneer machine, just in case.

One thing to be aware of is the tape becoming sticky, I've certainly had problems with Ampex and some BASF tape in all formats 1/4" to 2". The only way to know is to have it looked at professionally and then it'll need baking.

Slight thread drift but there is a resurgence of open reel hi-fi with a few companies selling 1/4" tapes recorded from the original mastered stereo tape.

Obviously there is a very limited catalogue and they are ludicrously expensive (something like £400 an album) but the dynamic range on them would be fantastic. 😄

No, it's 10.5" tape.  The company might cover costs, but I don't trust the tape being posted anywhere...

You're not posting any details by providing the information...

What format is it in?
What speed?
how long is the track?

- they didn't ask for any other details, track name, label, company, other people involved - without the info above, no one can advise any further on costs/capability etc...
