WalkleyIan   10 #13 Posted July 20, 2015 Certainly if you start wandering out of lane a rumble is much better than hitting one of the trees along there.  Indeed, an ex paramedic friend of mine could tell you many a grim story about incidents he's attened down there which goes some way towards explaining why it's 40mph and not national speed limit
 Share this content via...
smog   10 #14 Posted July 20, 2015 GAHHHH. You're on the wind up right. You realise as a motorist familiar with the highway code that cyclists are not obliged to use cycle paths, and if they aren't doing it's probably for good reason. And you also realise that if you were delayed at all, it was probably for 10s of seconds, which you subsequently made up after passing the cyclist, and then lost when you hit traffic anyway.  Presumably smog couldn't see the tree debris, or thought that the cyclist should have to cycle through it anyway, lord knows that motorists are more important and can't possibly be delayed by a few seconds.  Wow, what a kind and thoughtful human you are! I would not normally have had an issue with it, as I stated. I merely thought that perhaps the cyclist in question could have used the "cycle path" (which was clear actually) if there was one. It was much more than a few seconds too. Gosh, I had forgotten how rude people could be on here.
 Share this content via...
NightFlight   10 #15 Posted July 20, 2015 Cycle path or not, you still need to be giving cyclists sufficient room to fall off without hitting them; I'm not sure the cyclist being another foot to the left would've made it any easier to pass them safely. smog   10 #16 Posted July 20, 2015 :roll:I'm not stupid, I do cycle myself as I said. This cyclist was right in the centre of the road for quite a long time. I did give them plenty of space, I didn't overtake. Just pointing out that I thought it was a cycle lane.........
 Share this content via...

In other words knowing where the road starts and ends
 Share this content via...
newcomer01   10 #18 Posted July 20, 2015 (edited) Indeed, an ex paramedic friend of mine could tell you many a grim story about incidents he's attened down there which goes some way towards explaining why it's 40mph and not national speed limit  Rivelin Valley Road is a great road, a few pot holes maybe ,but still a nice road if people just took time to look at the entire valley instead of razzing up and down on a regular basis. How I wish they would stick to 40 mph and that would make me a very happy man.Sadly I have seen too much carnage by speeding vehicles ,especially when you can hear them winding their machines up just after the first "s" bend ( that is when you are coming up)and you feel an accident coming.  Regarding the white lines, they are intermitant throughout Rivelin Valley and are used by both cyclists and joggers .I think vehicles who travel up or down are aware of the lines and that they are used .You may or may not know that there is only a path as far as the paddling pool area and so it is difficult for both walkers and cyclists.  As a footnote ,SCC do on a regular basis clean the gullies on both sides of the road but they fill back up just as quickly Edited July 20, 2015 by newcomer01 spelling error
 Share this content via...

Just take care crossing at the S bend, and where the footpath crosses Rails Rd, Lovely walk on a decent path, following the river with possibility of having a spot of fishing in one the dams. hyper   10 #22 Posted July 21, 2015 .... you still need to be giving cyclists sufficient room to fall off without hitting them....how do you mean "room to fall off"? Falling off isn't normally part of cycling  Its like saying give other cars room to avoid their crashes
 Share this content via...
old tup   30 #23 Posted July 21, 2015 My daughter and hubby bought their dream house up Rivelin Valley at the top end of the A57,every time we visit the road is like Brands Hatch!.Motor bikes and cars going flat out its a death trap, whenever I leave their gateway I have to put my foot flat down to get away!.If I don,t one day I may be a statistic myself!.Cyclists are in my opinion are in danger all the way on that road, every one thinks they are Lewis Hamilton, some of the accidents up there are horrendous, mostly down to speeding and losing control!. Am I right in assuming you mean the A57 up Moscar, as opposed to Rivelin Valley Road? RVR, which the thread is about runs from the old post office down to Malin Bridge and while you get the odd idiot, is in my opinion, generally driven quite carefully.
