Speed Limits

Is it time to increase the speed limit on Sheffield Parkway to 60  mph and increase the speed limit on Penistone Road to 40 mph?

Drivers seem to ignore the current limits on both these roads and the authorities appear to have little interest in enforcing them.

Yes, and Bochum Parkway up to 50 or 60 too.

It's only the badly designed slipways that keeps Parkway at 50 limit, with on-slips joined to off-slips so you get vehicles trying to join as others are trying to leave. It's why after Handsworth it goes up to NSL (70). No more stupid junction designs all the way up to J33.

Exactly, Rotherham Council deal with common sense. Likewise for their major dual-carriageways that are 50mph like West Bawtry Road.

 

As for the Parkway, does anyone really stick to 50mph? Even during the daytime it's not unusual to see cars travelling in excess of 60-70mph.

From junction 33 Rotherham to Handsworth  on the parkway it is 70mph speed limit

Try getting on/off the ring road going through Birmingham if you think ours are bad  You have much less time/space for the same thing.

Needs resurfacing too, poor approach to Sheffield from the M1

I think most Drivers which are probably all out of Towners, think or consider they are still on the Motorway coming from the M1 at (J33) onto the Parkway. (Like they always pull up so sharply when seeing the (40 Signs) at City Centre End....)

 

Maybe we can get it resurfaced paid for by EEC before 'Brexit' happens...lol

Think Rotherham Council care more about their own approach from the M1 than the Sheffield side of the M1. They are already cash strapped although they are resurfacing a few roads at the minute - Great Eastern Way at Parkgate been one which has seen the infamous 3 lane roundabout with no road markings actually gain them for the 1st time since it was constructed in the early 80s!

The Parkway in Sheffield was designed and built as an Urban Motorway and the correct speed limit for such roads is 50mph.

 

As has been covered on other threads, roads are designed to the speed limit which is going to apply. The design standards for higher speeds are different and it's difficult and expensive to increase speed limits later in the day. Other than saving motorists a few seconds, there aren't actually many benefits to doing so and there are a number of downsides, such as safety, so Local authorities find it difficult to justify and obtain funding for increasing speed limits.

Question was asked a little tongue in cheek as most drivers are not aware of the limits on both roads or simply choose to ignore them.

The authorities appear to condone their speed as cannot remember speed enforcement vans on either road.
