There is nothing to stop a van loaded with contraband crossing the border under every solution proposed by the UK so far.

It doesn't!  At best, they could read the number plate, but would have no idea of the vans contents.

 

It's essentially carte-blanche for smugglers.

I guarantee that the first Irish citizen to be arrested or detained for refusing to have their vehicle searched will have tens, if not hundreds of thousands of people on the streets in border areas.

 

If the Irish know about anything, it is standing up for themselves.

Oh Dear, the value of Sterling is dropping like a stone, do the negotiators not realise that Britain is a spent force. with no Empire to prop us up the E.U. rescued this nation from becoming a third world country. Remember "the poor man of Europe" ? Brought down in the 70's and 80's by nefarious industrial activity, we needed a saviour. No Deal would leave us exposed and so many nations still have an axe to grind from our occupation, offers of cooperation will be subject to reparations for past misrule. The expression 'Kick him while he's down' springs to mind and the special relationship with a certain nation would not be enough to avoid insult as demonstrated at the Women's World Football Cup-of-tea gesture. Promises of spending sprees would have to be broken if and when the money runs out, no one would offer loans in those circumstances and we really would hit rock bottom. We could lose Scotland and Scottish oil and this situation in NI could be ungovernable. On the other hand we could soar.

Maybe you could show us some evidence for that being anything other than spin and wishful thinking. EVERY credible forecaster worldwide, has said that this is going to be a disaster.

 

And this is not just an economic matter but a political one too. A recent interview with a ‘China expert’ on the current protests in Hong Kong, said that the 50 year ‘two systems’ agreement from 1997 is being ripped up very publicly by the government in Beijing, largely because the Chinese government sees Britain as a spent force which will complain about the treatment of demonstrators but in reality be in no position to do anything about it.

nah they said it'll be great for us etc etc, then later on they have started saying it wont be as bad as people make out, the total catastrophes still to come

My employer offered us volunteering opportunities including the possibility of burning mounds of dead sheep if a no deal Brexit happened. Obviously this didn't  really appeal to me much but now the National Sheep Association in Wales is warning of the same thing.
