Parkwood Springs FC 1869-1880

Recommended Posts

Parkwood Springs FC was formed in 1869 it was the fourteenth oldest football club in Sheffield, and equal fourty sixth in England!.It was thought to have originated from Messrs Ridge,s (limited)Norfolk Street,Hon.Sec. a Mr Ben Hammond!.In those days if you didn,t send in a match report there was no mention in the press, its earliest is from 1869 about a meeting in the White Horse Inn owned by Mr J Brough at Parkwood Springs to elect members for the next season!.At this pub they held concerts to raise money and for the team members to socialise, the first match report was in 1873 played on a Monday against Gleadless Club away which they lost one to nil after a reported excellent contest!.In those days of course the game was all amateur and a lot rougher ,the prima donnas of today wouldn,t last five minutes, the info I have about the side only spans the years in the title but I thought a few forumers might be interested especially Retep!.

I did know the information it was also Parkwood Springs Cricket Club , the White Horse became the Reindeer Inn.

Parkwood Springs Cricket Club, Oct 6 1868

The conclusion of the cricketing season in connection with the above club was celebrated on Saturday by a dinner, at the house of Mr. Brough, White Horse Inn, Parkwood Springs, where a numerous company assembled.

Mr. F. Stephens presided, Mr James Hurst officiated as vice.

The Vice-chairman congratulated the members upon the success that had attended them during the season, they having won nine matches, lost four, and drawn two.

A very pleasant and agreeable evening was spent.

Jabez Cotton had the Parkwood Hotel at the same time.

Had to be the bottom part Albert, the top part that became the heliport wasn't re-developed until 1963.

Looking at the White Horse a possibility would be behind and uphill, before the block of houses were built,  a game against Oxford second team at Parkwood Grounds states that Oxford kicked with the wind up the hill, Parkwood 4 Oxford 0.
