A new small political party

Recommended Posts

The gang of 7 is now a gang of 11.

Do we support a new small party, should we have an electoral system that allows them to flourish?

A gang of 11 and 12 Liberal Democrats, they may well form one larger party.

Are there any implications for Brexit, Corbyn or May?

A small party needs a leader and policies, the Liberal Democrats already have both. A re-branded Liberal Tory/Lab party is the way forward?

Single issue parties rarely last very long in UK politics and once the Brexit issue is resolved one way or another, they will not even have a single issue to support.

With enough votes on their side they could end up having a deciding say in matters as the Torys don't have a majority, is it 326 voting MPs needed to win?

Why do you think they are only a brexit related party? Both the former Labour and former Conservative MPs have said they disagree with the direction their former parties have been moving in in general - not just on Brexit.

They are not a single issue party.  They are looking to steer a course between two mainstream parties who have become increasingly extreme in the last few years.

They have all left their respective parties because of their handling of Brexit.

There is already a party between the two mainstream parties but the electorate has already rejected them in the last two elections.

Did you read their various resignation letters?  Brexit was one small part of the issue. All cited the growing moves to left and right wing extremes.

I'm not saying they will be successful (although it's interesting to note the SDP polled 27% compared to Labours 28%) in the first General Election after that split, but if history repeats itself they will have an impact, largely to the detriment of Labour.   However, to call them a single issue group is misleading.

I think this is a turning point in British politics. So many people don't want  Corbin because of his left wing views and don't want the Tories because they rip the poor/disabled.

You end up voting, (or not bothering voting), for the the party you least like.

Hope it works, and if they adopt the middle ground it should, but would I put money on it working🤔

I believe the age of the internet and social media will help the small parties.

I would think a major problem for new small parties is the lack of history. The Liberal Democrats are only polling around 10%, yet they have a great deal of support at local elections and candidates that are willing to stand.

The Liberal Democrats are winning council seats every week due to that historical support.

FPTP is a very effective method of ensuring that there's only room for 2 main parties.

if we want more parties,  or, we want a 'new' party, we need to change the voting system. We had a referendum on that, we said no.

so 2 parties it is then.

example : green party. let's say they get 3% in polls, that should convert to 18 MPs.

they've got 1.

it's rubbish, but we were asked - this is what we said we want.

Which presumably is why he came within a week of winning the 2017 election?

Wouldn't that just be a re-run of the 1980's when the SDP (gang of four = a few others,) joined up with the Liberals to form the Liberal Democrats?

That didn't end well did it, still, if they want political obscurity. .  .
