Ecclesall Road in trouble

Recommended Posts

i used to live near london road at night and when we'd finished work  in the early hours of the morning we used to use either one out of the only two dirty chicken shops as we called them.  we'd call in most nights till one of got ill than we'd use the other one for a bit... never trusting any of the rest at all...  then the dirty pizza shops started springing up people pretending to be italian with their turkey ham and selling what passes for a kebab... allegedly minced meat on a stick ... not like chubby's or murdocks where the meat was at one time at least recognisable as meat.   these shops proliferated some pubs died and now we feel london road is just another place to avoid, especially from 17:00 onwards

we see ecco rd going the same way ..  it'll take a while and some shops will no doubt endure but places to eat ..  we reckon they are just living on borrowed time

the city center is dying ..  west street nearly has page hall never stood a chance and neither woodseats nor hillsborough are what they once were and in time we reckon the proliferated low quality fast food shops wil make their way towards kelham island...  and no doubt kill that too.

You don't go to the city though because of the driving and the parking, presumably that includes London and Ecllesall Road.

Presumably you haven't seen either road, nor West Street or the rest of the city centre in quite a few years now.

This is true - the road has always been vibrant with venues always shutting down and opening up .... but if anyone wants to try an alternative vibe you could do worse than venture down to Abbeydale Road especially the area around the old cinema ... teams and teams of new coffee shops, cafes, restaurants and bars are have opened up in recent years 😮

As much as i love the area, I think you're exaggerating a bit.   In the three years I've lived there, literally two new bars have opened - the gin bar on the corner and the artisan beer place.  There is a new coffee shop a few doors down from the cinema, although I'm pretty sure it was a coffee shop in its former life.   Three places opposite the cinema are now standing empty - The antiques centre, Steel City Cakes and that place that opened as a vegan cafe just a few months ago, have all closed in the last two months.

The best thing about London Road is that the type of people who avoid London Road are never on London Road.

The old Yummy Hut and Pennywise building is to be a cafe bar over three floors, currently in refurbishment.
