Old Foxhill/Birley carr

Recommended Posts

Old house, just sold at Birley Carr/ Foxhill.

its on a little lane, off the main Foxhill rd, opposite Aysgarth rd.

not sure, if I've posted this in right place.

anyone got any info on this building, I went to go and have a look and above the entrance door, is carved in stone, the date 1866.  It was/is a lovely house.

just woundered if anyone had any links to old maps, historical info, was it a farm?

thanks

This is Birley Mount, shown on this 1950s map.  https://i.postimg.cc/xjMNXp76/Birley.jpg

Looking at older maps it doesn't seem to have been a farmhouse, but according to an old Forum thread it was once the home of Joseph Clifton Allen, owner of Wadsley Forge, also known as J.C.Allen's Forge. See here  https://www.sheffieldforum.co.uk/topic/411293-allens-forge-leppings-lane/

Used to be friends with the family who lived there in the 60s ,they owned a decorating business and the record shop on Wadsley bridge shops. There was a great orchard all round the house ,great for scromping. Molinari's ice cream took over some of the land to park their Van's. I was amazed that inside there was a separate staircase that went into the kitchen for staff to use.
