True, and if converted to retail space they could still collect rates and such.

 

Bit of an ask for the group to raise multi-millions for the refurb though, but better than it sitting there rotting away

There are many clips available onYouTube made by Urban Explorers showing the inside of the building today. It's leaking badly and is slowly returning to nature. Sad to see this once magnificent place going to the dogs. However it's not too late and sufficient investment can save it. But do prospective developers think Sheffield town centre is a futuristic proposition? That's the key, not some bunch of councillors to decide.

I say convert it into up-market apartments.

They’ll have the Hen and Chickens as their local and could, presumably, lobby for the Cannon to be reopened.

the owners will wait for it to be beyond repair, then demolish it and sling up a new structure in it's place.

 

Cheaper than restoration and renovation, they'd probably put in for a taller structure as well and build a load of city centre apartments.

That obviously sounds like commercial sense, but are there no listed covenants on the building? I understand that it can never be used as a courtroom again but what about something similar to what happened to the Lacarno?

The council would (thankfully) never allow that.

 

The building is listed, and a CPO would be issued if it became clear that was happening (indeed I believe the motions for that were already happening until this new buyer turned up).
