Bochum Parkway speed limit

The stretch of road in question is around 1 mile long. The majority of vehicles travel around 50mph or higher on it anyway. Changing the limit would have no actual real life effect, it would just legalise the 'speeding' most drivers on there do already.

All this fuss about travelling at 50 mph for half a mile?

"1 mile long" I said.

Also, what's "all this fuss"? A disagreement on an internet forum?!

On the parkway?

there's loads of junctions, lots of traffic joining, and leaving. The slip roads are short, and often uphill, hence merging traffic is travelling slowly.

thats why it's a 50.

plus, there's almost always a queue at each end - rendering higher speeds completely pointless.

Functionally, it's not even a 50 - reducing the limit would make more sense. It wouldn't increase most journey times, it would reduce the length of the stop-start queues, it would reduce the amount of fuel pointlessly burnt by people  accelerating  to 50+, and it would reduce the road noise inflicted on those who live next to it.

Most of that is correct, but "almost always a queue".  No.  Almost always at rush hour, but there are about another 20 hrs in the day when there isn't a queue at either end of the parkway.

It's classed as an urban motorway, so the appropriate speed limit is 50 according to government guidance. That's why it changes to National speed limit once it is no longer "urban"

You said the stretch of road was a mile long. It is, but, as nobody will be approaching those speeds at the beginning or end of that mile increasing the limit will only allow a section in the middle at which the limit will be observed.

Towards Norton:

Section 1  A short accelerating section out of the junction with due care and attention to conditions and other users.

Section 2  The 'fast'  bit which includes an unprotected footpath crossing.

Section 3  A long deceleration down to the junction with road and footpath crossings, access to fields, lanes and minor roads with slow left turning and entering traffic including heavy plant crossing, school transports and farm vehicles.

I would suggest that Section 1+3 is about equal to Section 2 ie half a mile and not worth the fuss.

Nice skid marks on the road in this photo- a clue perhaps to why their is a limit.

What fuss? Sticking up a few 50 discs?

Just for a start, what about the 40 signs?

It isn’t that straightforward.

The legal orders that underpin the restrictions cost thousands to process.

Putting in higher speed limits can mean that other measures are required like crash barriers to protect street lighting.

They're already there. Take a few down and replace with 50s.

I doubt a crash barrier is needed on Bochum Parkway, but quote me happy on making it a 50?

Has anyone seen the deer on the side of the road near the old aerodrome? Does anyone know if they ever venture onto the road itself? or do they stick on the edges?
