WhiteFender 12 #1 Posted February 2, 2019 Please be aware of a new scam circulating around Sheffield. A Very well spoken and educated woman relates how you have been overcharged COUNCIL TAX. for a number of yrs; and she and her company will retrieve it for you It's usually many thousands of pounds. It's amazing how much she knows about you and your family, phone numbers, email a/c , post codes, how many bank accounts held etc. Frighteningly accurate. She then ask you if you want her 'Firm' to do it for you or will leave it for you to do yourself, at twice the cost . She will then ask you for your bank a/c card numbers to enable her to start the claim. She even mentions Martin Lewis almost as a personal friend and mentions ner Senior manager and gets him to confirm everything. As soon as she mentions... Council tax refunds.... put the phone down on her
 Share this content via...
Happ 25 #2 Posted February 2, 2019 I’d be concerned how she held all the information you said she does about you. Clearly something suspicous about the suggested proposal, but the real issue here is how she has your information. The majority of that detail is not in the public domain unless you are very lacking with security of your personal infomation. You should follow up and try and find how this information was obtained. I love winding folk like that up and every minute they are the phone to me they are not on the phone to someone more gullible, although I do have to say that I have very limited sympathy for anyone who gives their bank account details to a total stranger on the phone. By the way, if they mentioned Martyn Lewis it might be worth sticking something on his social media as he has been getting very militant with scammers using his name recently and 'his people' may be able to do some digging. I thought the same actually. If you can get a phone number off them, I’m sure Martin Lewis will take them to the cleaners.
 Share this content via...
Jeddo 10 #5 Posted February 3, 2019 The odd thing is, this scammer is not too far from the mark. Which can add to their credibility. The council have been overcharging folk for years. In the 70s or 90s (I forget which) they did a drive-by valuation of properties only, to evaluate the council tax band they should put them in. For speed I expect. A lot of properties were wrongly assessed (i.e over assessed) so there are lots of folk overpaying what they should be paying, and there are companies out there who offer to sort it out for you. My two neighbours are overpaying, and have never bothered to find out. You can check your banding on-line on the Council website. If it turns out you are in the wrong band you get a refund plus something else like interest or compensation I think, but certainly backdated council tax refund from the date you were wrongly assessed. This is all from memory, so I'm a bit unsure here but it certainly still applies. Claimants should make sure they are over banded not underbanded, before claiming, in case they can claim the difference back from the householder.
