'Everything’s leaving': Sheffield's town centre gutted by vacancies

Recommended Posts

Sheffield makes the Grauniad, for all the wrong reasons. 🙁

According to a new Guardian analysis, over the last five years, while English and Welsh town centres have lost an average of 8% of their stores – itself a stark indicator of the crisis on British high streets – the city of Sheffield has lost 17.8%. The drop is nearly as bad in nearby Rotherham.

Worst affected were clothing stores, specialist shops and restaurants. Some stores are doing better – there has been an increase in cafes, tattoo shops and hair and beauty salons, for example – but in Sheffield you can see the net effect. Fargate has lost an electronics store, a plus-size clothing retailers, a video games store and countless eateries.

On nearby Devonshire Street, home to a warren of independent shops and an increasing number of places to get a new trim, ink or a soy latte, the busiest haunt on a January weekday is the 200 Degrees café.

The blame for Sheffield’s retail decline has long been placed on Meadowhall. Since it opened in 1990, the huge shopping complex three miles (5km) outside the city centre has offered more shopping options under one roof, with free parking. Adding to the competition, last July a new £35m retail park boasting high street behemoths such as Wilko, Next and TK Maxx arrived in the suburb of Meadowhead.

If places stay empty we could use them to give the homeless somewhere to stay.

I have been having for long the same idea. However, the question is, who will fund such a place - because it will need a lot of money to be run properly.

Emptyness can have something very beautiful and interesting about it. No need to cram city like crazy. The relaxed city centre is something I like very much about Sheffield.

Which electronics store has gone from Fargate?

and yes, countless eateries - countless because it’s zero?

The tattoo artist is unconvinced by the effects of on-line shopping.

I'm nit sure how purchasing a tattoo on-line would work.

It includes other cities, national research.

I have always said that moving centre away from the tram is going to slowly kill it.

I take train to Leeds now to start shopping there

Thanks to Northern Rail and their incessant strikes, L**ds isn't really an option for me at present. On the other hand, there are a number of retail parks not far from me which are more convenient than Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley town centers. Not to mention Elsecar Heritage Centre for nice small shops. And when I lived in Dronfield I came to much prefer shopping in Chesterfield.

For me, these days Cole Brothers is about the only thing worth visiting Sheffield town center for. This is a very bad thing. When you visit a town it's the town center that you judge the place on.
