tzijlstra   11 #14 Posted January 30, 2019 Benito Mussolini - he only aligned to fascism because he had grand plans of ruling all of the former Roman empire, most of which was held by France and the UK, so he had to go with their enemies (Nazi Germany). At heart he was very much a socialist liberal, but to gain Hitler's favour (and accompanying promises of the Balkan, North Africa and the Middle East) he agreed to introduce anti-Jewish laws and things started to unraffle from there.  bad decision making as a result of pandering to Hitler meant he entered war too soon, Italy was still very much a 'nation in becoming' with many disparate factions that did not want to fight side by side for the same cause, and finally, his efforts to try and gain an 'industrial war machine' led to the destruction of its own economy.  Don't get me wrong, he was a bad, bad man, but the typical characterisation of Italy as the idiots that fought alongside Germans and had to be bailed all the time is not that simple. Ontarian1981 Â Â 10 #21 Posted January 31, 2019 (edited) Â I would suggest Alan Turing, he helped saved millions of lives in WW2 with his work on breaking the German enigma code and also was relevant in the birth of the computer. Sadly, he was chemically castrated because of his homosexuality and committed suicide soon after.
