tinfoilhat 11 #1 Posted January 23, 2019 This is surely a sign I’m getting old. Millions of people follow what appears to be a whole host of vacuous attractive young things who talk about very little and sell you stuff. And they get paid millions. It must pay the long list of companies who use influencers in the long run or they wouldn’t use them, but overall, I just don’t get it. Is it an age thing? I don’t follow kylie Jenner but assumed her stock in trade would be make up and parties? Has she solved the meaning life? Has she got brexit nailed down? Is she incredibly funny? Why do millions hang on her every word!?!?
 Share this content via...
Waldo 96 #2 Posted January 23, 2019 (edited) Yes, I hear lots about social media influencers, not so much about social media influencees... I guess it's not something people would advertise? "hi, nice to met you, I'm a social media influencee, what do you do?" Edited January 23, 2019 by Waldo
 Share this content via...

Mister M 1,545 #4 Posted January 23, 2019 I'm quite careful not to follow trends, and I pursue my own interests and have my own ideas. Though having said that, I probably am influenced but in ways I'm not aware of. Even before the advent of social media, there were influencers and those that were easily led. TV, journalists, life coaches, style gurus and various 'experts' tell how we should live our lives, what we should look like, what our homes look like etc etc. It's always good to keep a critical eye on what the dominant message is, but not to get sucked in by it. Why do millions hang on her every word!?!? You're not old...but you are very wise. You have enough experience of living in this world to be happy "ploughing your own furrow". It is something to applaud and something we should all aim for. To make your own decisions, based on your own judgement, based on your own experience, is a powerful thing. No longer are your thoughts and actions "owned" or "directed" by others. These days, I do not give a stuff what people think of me and it is truly a liberating experience. Gone are the "fitting in" worries of my 20s, 30s and 40s... Now I just do what I have gradually learnt over the years "as the right thing". If you are my generation (early X), then please help to spread that philosophy and help others younger than yourselves, through those difficult, insecure years...and others older who may fear the march of the digital world. Act as a bridge between the digital generation (our kids) and the analog elders (our parents)... Lead one side gently into the digital future and open the others eyes to the wonders of the old analog world. As a useful side effect of growing old, you become wonderfully resistant to the power of advertising (excepting bicycles of course). Advertisers truly do not khow to target my cohort...are digital or analog...and have therefore given up on us...which suits us fine. Unfortunately they subsequently redouble their efforts on targeting the young... What a waste of time the whole advertising and marketing industry is... I suspect that many people don't see themselves as influencees. A couple of years ago there was a vile facebook group based around the family of a young boy who was dying in a Liverpool hospital. A friend of mine sent me a link to one of their petitions which I thought was a bit strange as she works at Sheffield Children's Hospital. When I asked her why she was supporting a group that was threatening her colleagues in Liverpool and even posting their home addresses on the internet and encouraging people to attack them, she just said that she had no idea that this is what they were doing and 'liked' it because everyone else on her facebook had 'liked' it.
