Door knocker buying cars-legit?

Just had a man knock on the door asking if I want to sell our car.

Is this common?

What was he really up to?

Depends on the car. If it’s a rare or old car bordering on classic. I had a mate who had one and he got people knocking on his door every 6 months or so.

I used to get this when I had old Land Rovers & Range Rovers.  You also get people asking to buy bangers for banger-racing, or even people wanting them for scrap, although in my experience the latter people usually don't bother asking.

As others have said, unless it's a classic or much sought after, I'd avoid like the plague

Perhaps I am too cynical, but I don't think this bloke was interested in buying the car for a proper price.

What was his real intent?

It is a new car with odd plates.
