Thatcher did have more about her though. May?

The attributes awarded to her by her supporters - durability, refusal to be swayed etc - you could just as easily give to a bag of wet sand.

She's a mystery.

Thatcher did coin the phrase but was much more of a pragmatist.

As I watched more weapons grade incompetence unfold this morning, I pondered the question what would Merkel do if faced with the same problem? Would her steely German efficiency got brexit sorted in two years? It’s been built up as one of life’s unsolvable problems, but is it really?

Well, if we're firmly in the realm of 'what ifs', then based on past long performance of doing the pragmatically-expedient instead of the politically-safe (think 2015, but not the only example by far), Frau Merkel would (i) not have called the referendum in the first place resigned on the day of the referendum result, then (ii) acknowleged the result with (iii) announcing a raft of consultative initiatives across the Deutschxit-voting Länder to find out exactly what needs fixing to make people happier, before (iv) going on to fix as much as possible.

She certainly wouldn't have embarked on a my-Deutschxiting-way-or-the-highway policy, premised on wholly undefined, unresearched and undebated hard positions the way May did.

Its not just the remainers, Brexiteers are also failing to support Mays deal which will take us out of the EU; the alternative is a softer Brexit supported by some Labour MPs or another referendum with the possibility of a vote to remain.

You missed one, leaving without a deal.

It says here that Ireland is forcing the EU to play hardball over the backstop agreement= https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/brexit/8241925/brexit-latest-theresa-may-blames-jeremy-corbyn-brussels-backstop/

Remainer tactics to sabotage brexit imo......

The reality is that one Polish minister's suggestion has little support amongst the EU27.

Of course Ireland will play hardball

It doesn’t want another war on its doorstep

Hardly: the EU posited the RoI - NI border as one of its 3 key issues to solve, right at the start of the negotiations 2 years ago.

And the UK government agreed to it at the first negotiation meeting.

The backstop is merely a contingency measure against the failure of the UK government to resolve the issue (which, let's say this again, it agreed to resolve 2 years ago).

Ireland is forcing noone to do anything. The Sun is just spinning May getting the Irish door slammed in her face (again - and a wholly predictable outcome because, let's say this again, the UK agreed to resolve the issue 2 years ago, and still hasn't...and in the EU, the Irish have as much -or as little- say as the UK: who knew?)

No tactics, and no sabotaging whatsoever: just that elusive cake and eating which you were promised, and still aren't going to get. You can still Brexit without a deal. Then hey, no backstop needed. But then, all the consequences of Brexiting without a deal. Tough choices, but them's your apples.

If you keep taking your news and opinions from the red tops, don't be surprised when you get called out about their misrepresentations and spin.

The may be what leavers want, but MPs and business leaders want a deal, no deal will not happen.
