Hello Alba , I've lived in Handsworth all my life nearly 70 yrs. I went to Handsworth Infants in the white huts which were at the back , then Athelstan and on to Brook. I remember the Riviera Club which was in the chapel on Hendon St. I then graduated to the pubs , Old Crown Cross Keys, Turf , New Crown and both clubs ,Everest , Anglers and Norfolk too. Old Crown is the only one I use regularly now though, I do a bit of voluntary work trying to keep the rec a bit decent but I think Handsworth has gone down the nick a lot since I was a kid.

I was brought up on the Triangle Estate until I moved away in 1980. Never really ventured much above the Parkway but used to wander round the pit entrance and the pit head buildings. We used to play in the top field until the Parkway went over it.

I went to St Joseph's RC school from1950 to 1956 , although I lived in Catcliffe. When I was about 9 or 10. I was heading for my bus stop on Handsworth Road when right before my eyes a girl from my class was killed by a Thomas Black coal lorry on a crossing patrolled by a police officer. I could not sleep for days. Sorry to bring up a bad thing about your neck of the woods, but I have not talked about this for many years.

Bonds bread shop is stiil there - Sturdys was a weird shop, everything was rammed in all over the place I don't know how they managed to find anything but they always did. Plaza was brilliant for kids on a Saturday morning. And Mr Parsley would carry your mums shopping home if she couldn't manage
