Cfs/me literature and education

Recommended Posts

Last year I was diagnosed with CFS/ME. I was also diagnosed with Fibromyalgia (though I personally refute this). I'm trying to educate myself on the condition in order to better able myself to manage it. I feel it might be worth sharing some of the resources that we've found so far and that have been or seem promising. I hope these can help others.

  • The first book that I have found really useful was 'When The Body Says No' by Dr Gabor Maté. I honestly cannot recommend this enough, I found it to be so interesting. https://drgabormate.com/book/when-the-body-says-no/

  • Then there is The Optimum Health Clinic in London, who have a couple of nice videos about recovery among others. https://www.theoptimumhealthclinic.com/aboutus-overview/ There's also this info pack which looks to be helpful https://www.theoptimumhealthclinic.com/free-info-pack/

  • Audio Course 'ME Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Awareness' by Centre of Excellence.  https://www.centreofexcellence.com/shop/me-chronic-fatigue-syndrome-awareness-audio-course/ (I bought this on Audible).

  • Haven't tried this one out yet - (Audible again) Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Living Your Life Without The Limits of CFS by Kara Aimer. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Chronic-Fatigue-Syndrome-without-Fibromyalgia/dp/1508610746

Please share any that you've found helpful or that you think look promising!

I have ME and fibromyalgia, and have had them for some time. I have read widely and understand it well, the problem is all the other people who don't understand it. Even close family members sometimes fail to grasp what it means.

I often feel I am put in a position of having to remind people of how I feel, (which I think makes them think you're constantly moaning,) or they forget about it altogether and expect far more of you than you're able to deliver. I know of relationships which have ended because they simply can't bear any more of this dichotomy. I don't know what the answer is.

Listening to your body and learning to manage it the best way you can. Everyone is different in the  way this horrible illness attacks our bodies.

Two excellent books on M.E. / Chronic Fatigue are:

'Living with M.E.' by Dr Charles Shepherd.

and

'M.E: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.  A practical Guide,' by Dr Anne MacIntyre.

Both very readable and helpful.
