To be fair, they were great in the old days before you had the internet. 

 

I bought a Nakamichi 3-head tape deck for £35, reduced from £50 when I asked the shop manager who on earth are Nakamichi? This thing was probably from a recording studio as later that week I got a Tascam DA20 DAT recorder from the same shop for £50. The two items were worth well over £2000 at the time.

 

These days a quick google of anything will give you its approximate value in seconds.
