Options-connecting vga flatscreen to dvi socket on pc.

The flat screen monitor has VGA cable and PC has DVi socket. Adaptor sockets are easily available-ie VGA to DVi. These only adapt the connections. They don't convert the digital signal from the PC to analogue capability of the monitor.

Ok, there are cables available that apparently convert the signal, but I understand the PC has to have a compatible card inside for this to work??

Additional info for adaptors:
Dvi adaptors are available in 3 variants.

DVi-D, digital cability.
DVi-A, Analogue capability.
DVi-i, Digital & Analague.
(I don't know why someone would opt for the first two when DVi-i handles both).

Anyone have experience of screen/PC compatibility issues.

Hoping for a fix without having to replace a good flat screen monitor.

Look at the DVI socket, you will see a collection of pins, then off to the side a flat bit...

the flat bit will either have 4 pins around it, or not.... if not, then it does not support an Analogue Signal... Beyond that, you can pretty much not worry...

Otherwise, you'll be looking at an active adaptor/converter, or new display!

I'm surprised the PC only has a DVI socket.  I thought VGA was pretty standard?

 

How about one of these?  I picked one up from Ebay for a fiver a while back.

VGA hasn't been put on any new Mid-High end GPU's for a while, can still (some times) find them on lower-end and onboard solutions, but has been mostly phased out....

 I have the soctet with 4 pins at one end.

Otherwise, you'll be looking at an active adaptor/converter, or new display!
 

 I'm wanting to establish if the these work. The seller wrote that "the  PC needs to have the appropriate card for the converter cable to work". 

 

I have no idea if an appropriate card is pressent-I don't know what type of card it is that I would be 

looking for in respect of card type. I don't mind looking inside.

Was it actually an   analogue  monitor  you were connecting via this  or was it something else?  If it was a  monitor was the display  good?

Since it has the 4 pins at the end - it supports analogue out, so a simple DVI > VGA adaptor should work fine..

With  regards to the USB device, if it's specifically an "External Graphics Card / GPU" then it shouldn't need anything additional, other than drivers within Windows... (You will not be able to access BIOS via USB monitor/GPU)

 

Otherwise, you would need a GPU that  can support sending a video signal over USB - Though i'm not actually sure which do or don't as it's not something I have played with myself, i'd have to do a little research

Yeah, still analogue support...

those 4 pins are Sync, R, G, B in Analogue, - if those aren't present, it means there's no analogue signal on the connection..

With those being there, you can use a simple DVI > VGA adaptor as I said...

Ok thanks. I ordered one of these  on  Wed from e  bay. It should work the same. Will try it when it arrives Sat or Monday.
