Black swan walk

Does anyone know the history of this narrow alley off High Street? The buildings look almost Tudor in origin, the way they overhang the lower floors.

It has a turntable so vehicles could driven in and out forwards. I used to go down and scoot it round with one foot.   Its concreted in now but still visible on google maps satellite

The late Peter Harvey tells us in his book "Street Names of Sheffield" that the name Black Swan Walk is "from the old hotel, the Black Swan, which stood at 5 Fargate up to the 1880s when it was demolished for street widening".  Here is a link to a sheffieldhistory.co.uk thread that has some good photos., including one of a circular iron track and some gear work that must be where the turntable was that Flanker7 mentioned. https://www.sheffieldhistory.co.uk/forums/topic/17143-black-swan-walk-in-sheffield-city-centre/

Looking on YouTube & surprisingly, up popped this little video of a place I must have walked past thousands of times without giving it a second glance.  Bottom end of Fargate, Black Swan Walk, which runs parallel to Chapel Walk.

Also says there was a pub once down there called the 'White Bear'.  Fascinating the history we just walk past everyday.

It also used to have a metal turntable at the end .

There was no room for vehicles to do a 3 point turn .

Concreted in now but still visable on 'google maps'.
