Is patreon going down?

Recommended Posts

There's a bit of drama happening with Patreon (it's a crowd funding platform, where content creators receive donations from their followers) right now. Well, I say right now, it may have been going on for some time, but I've only just noticed.

From what I can tell, Patreon have unjustifiably (for political, while citing other reasons) closed the accounts of some high profile users, and there has been some backlash. Some users like Sam Harris,  are choosing to leave the platform in protest.

It looks as if groups like 'antifa' (you'll have to forgive my ignorance, I know next to nothing about them), are aggressively pushing their agenda and somehow persuading platforms to suppress any voices that don't align with their own.

Is that what's going on here?

What evidence do you have that antifa are aggressively causing it to be shut down or suppressed in some way?

im guessing none.

Antifa is short for anti fascist.

The reality is that Patreon have decided to close the accounts of a number of extremists because they don't want to be associated with hate freaks.

What is antifa ???

From wikipedia:

The Antifa (/ænˈtfə, ˈæntiˌfɑː/)[1] movement is a conglomeration of left wing autonomous, militant anti-fascist[7] groups in the United States.[11] The principal feature of antifa groups is their use of direct action.[12] They engage in varied protest tactics, which include digital activism, property damage, physical violence, and harassment against those whom they identify as fascist, racist, or on the far-right.[18] Conflicts are both online and in real life.[14] They tend to be anti-capitalist[19] and they are predominantly far-left and militant left,[20][12] which includes anarchists, communists and socialists.[25] Their stated focus is on fighting far-right and white supremacist ideologies directly, rather than through electoral means.[12]

The Department of Homeland Security in the US, has also classified the activities of anti-fascist groups (antifa) as “domestic terrorist violence”.

Justifiably so you'd think, if there's any accuracy to the wikipedia description.

When I get time Halibut, I'll post some of links to the videos I was watching last night. There were a couple at least, and I didn't think the individuals involved matched your description ("extremists because they don't want to be associated with hate freaks") at all. Of course, I could be wrong, and everyone on the internet posts their 'good side'; so would be happy for you to show me the error of my ways regarding the material I refer to.

As a general point of principle though; I think it's a bit short-sighted to shut dialog down, just because other people are saying something we don't want to hear, or that we feel hurts our own particular agenda.

Funnily enough Antifa started in the UK in the 90s, it came out of Anti fascist action mainly. It does tend to encompass anarchist members but also other far left, socialist members etc. the wiki page you pasted from is nonsense, yes the individual members being anarchist etc could be construed as anti capitalist etc but thats down to the nature of the individuals political beliefs NOT Antifa as a whole as the name may give you a clue to what they stand for / against.

As for the thread topic as a whole, ive not seen or read anything about it, but it could be seen as Antifa being the elephant in the room as usual and nothing to do with things. Generally racism, bullying, harassment is frowned upon and not seen as decent manners / bringing up. saying that there has been an increase in recent years where it is seen as being against the system, the norm etc and has grown with the rise of social media platforms and sites like youtube etc.

Seems to be platforms such as Patreon, Youtube, Facebook etc are cracking down on "hate speech" and those that spout it are turning into snowflakes and loudly and vocally condemning those that have banned such accounts and rightly or wrongly accusing certain groups of being invlved in such actions.

Patreon is a private platform owned by its members. It is entirely up to Patreon to decide who can or cannot use the platform within the law.

In many countries it is now a serious criminal offence to raise money for certain extremist organisations leading to jail time on conviction. If a platform decides to protect itself from prosecution it is nobody's business but theirs.

If you have a problem with this, there is nothing stopping you from setting up your own funding platform.

If any of you are interested in looking a little closer at this; here's the original video I came across last night:

Also, check out:

Are these people raging Nazi's or are they making any legitimate points?
