A splendid chap who has given so much pleasure to millions through his acting, writing and travel adventures. He even makes the occasional nod towards Sheffield as well - to give a positive mention to The Blades and to remind us that even though he had the misfortune to start life here - anything is still possible. mickyboy 10 #5 Posted December 29, 2018 Knighthoods along with all other awards became meaning less when we got Sir Elton, Sir Cliff , Sir Mick, and Sir Paul. True credit should go to the likes of Keith Richard, Paul Weller, Jim Broadbent, Benjamin Zephanaya, even Nigeria Lawson who turn down these meaningless old fashioned inconsequential reminders of a bygone age. spilldig 187 #6 Posted December 29, 2018 I basically agree with what Derby Tup said, but knighthoods for being able to do what you want to do and enjoy it and line your pockets at the same time. Ridiculous.
 Share this content via...
kidley 48 #7 Posted December 29, 2018 I wish i could have had a job like that or, maybe a footballer or even a retiring small party leader, any thing baring the hum drum jobs like what we were used to (see link) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJAeb0wiQjA
 Share this content via...

Ridiculous. Well said spilldig. Being rewarded for doing something you enjoy while making a load of money is ridiculous.
 Share this content via...
janie48 95 #9 Posted December 29, 2018 Hundreds of people in the Honours list have received recognition for charity work and other worthy achievements. The famous celebrities recognised for their contribution to entertainment and the arts are a small minority in comparison, but they are the ones who make the headlines. For some reason, some Sheffielders seem to begrudge one of their own achieving any success in life, its the same with Helen Sharman, I don't think she gets enough credit. I happen to think John the Pram Man should receive an honour, but I don't resent Michael Palin getting one.
 Share this content via...
*Wallace* 333 #10 Posted December 29, 2018 (edited) Who’s Helen Sharman ? Oh yes the woman who’s famous for dropping the flame at the student games and looking lost then pretending to light the cauldron when the only thing that was alight was the carpet she dropped the torch on. Yes she deserved a gong. Edited December 29, 2018 by *Wallace*
 Share this content via...

Yes she deserved a gong. She should have dropped the flame into the laps of the stupid councillors who were conned into saddling the city with £600m of debt to hold an event that nobody had heard of before or since. We're still paying it off at £25m a year to this day.
 Share this content via...

He must have been having a giggle if he mentioned the Blades, as he is a lifelong Wednedayite.
 Share this content via...
