The gap between the far right, far left and common sense

Recommended Posts

over recent years we have seen the rise of the so-called "far right" and "far left"

in Sheffield and the surrounding area, shouting mainly across the road from each other and never really getting to the bottom of anything.

when and where will common sense prevail?

You seem to be making an equivalence between the far right and the far left.

Today, six members of a far right group were jailed for membership of a terrorist organisation. I'm quite happy to partake in this discussion if you post details of six far left supporters jailed for similar offences.

The far right have a long récent record of violent attacks eg. man who ran his van into a crowd of people outside a mosque,  murder of Joe Cox, man who planned to attack a gay night at a local pub in Barrow, etc.

Referrals to Prevent strategy for right wing radicalisation have increased massively.

Lazy or malicious people  often  make the " left-right" false equivalency

According to MI5 four extreme right wing terrorist plots have been foiled since March 2017. They are currently investigating 100 other cases. Extreme right wing terrorism now regarded as equivalent to Islamist and  Northern Irish based terrorism.

The far right in UK seems full of dangerous deranged individuals. I presume tweedle  dee and tweedle dum of Britain First are still locked up, all been quiet there recently

Problem is that there's no clear definition of far-right/far-left. And it's very fashionable just to label opponents with those terms and disregard any arguments.

Regarding far-right - any anti-islamic group is always labeled as far-right so if you want to compare extremists on both sides, you should also look  at and count  islamic terrorists.

Common sense will prevail when the far right and far left are challenged by ordinary people so that their leaders see that there is no popular support for their extreme views.

Yes there is, they tend to be on the extreme ends of the spectrum and show obsessive tendencies to their thoughts and motives.

It's a matter of perception. The Telegraph and Daily Mail will paint Jeremy Corbyn as a hard left threat to society for wanting the re-nationalision of railways and utility companies. Others would see such a policy as commonsense.

Jacob Rees Smog will be castigated as being far right for some of his views yet patently isn't in comparison with the neo nazis jailed yesterday.

The terms are bandied around so much that they lack meaning unless properly defined.

I think Jeremy Corbyn's policies are similar to those that social democrats would recognise, or those of post war governments. That the Mail and Telegraph label them 'far left', show how far to the reactionary right those publications are
