Congestion charge in Sheffield

Recommended Posts

from what I remember about the Leeds plan they basically wanted to cover the entire city, which obviously would cost an absolute fortune in infastructure and running costs.

According to this: https://news.leeds.gov.uk/final-clean-air-charging-zone-proposals-revealed/

they were covering "more than half" the city and were asking for £40m, same as Sheffield

Isn't it self evident?

Unless you're asserting that air pollution is not at all harmful to health? WHich you're not, you've said you accept that in the last post.

What you've then done though is failed to understand statistics at all and called it speculation.

You don't have to have someone walk into a cloud of smog and die from immediate asphiation in order to attribute deaths to air pollution. But that seems to be your argument. If they didn't die choking and saying "can't breath, so much pollution" then you deny that anyone dies from air pollution. Thus you conclude that air pollution kills no-one. Which can only lead to the argument that we don't need to do anything about air pollution, because it's not killing anyone. It's a reductionist and unhelpfully simply way of looking at the problem.

Im not saying somebody has to walk into a cloud of smog and die to be counted as an air pollution death :hihi:

Im questioning where the 500 figure comes from. How is it determined? You can count the number of people who die of a heart attack, but not those who died from air pollution. Even if you strapped an air monitoring contraption to a new born baby and monitored it its readings for a life time you still couldnt categorically record the cause of death as air pollution if it eventually died of some respiratory disease.

Hmmm...

... which raises the question, how come Leeds thought they could cover more than half the city for the same amount as it would take Sheffield to cover the inner ring road? :suspect:

The costs are mainly for the retrofitting and conversions on the buses / taxis/ vans & trucks etc, not the anpr camera systems.

Hmmm...

... I'm not sure I understand the logic here.

Most bus services run through the centre of town, don't they?

So if you retrofit/convert a bus to enable it to run in town then obviously it'll still be 'clean' when it's running out of town.

If the main costs are in doing the conversions and not the anpr cameras then why is it being restricted to the inner ring road?

It's not as if the conversions will only be done to vehicles that only ever spend their time inside the inner ring road...

Could you also count such a number in a region that has far less air pollution?

Nobody died from air pollution in Sheffield is a ridiculous assertion.

Have you hard evidence the contrary.

Must not forget the ANPR cameras , hey . The councils revenue raisers .

30 thousand fines handed out to mororists for bus lane " crimes" last year

The number that died of heart attacks? Yes you could. But the difference between the results isnt necessarily the result of air pollution

They measure the number in many different areas with different levels of pollution, and even divide the data in each area up (including in a control area with little pollution) according to risk factors to measure the dependence on many things not related to air pollution? Then this gives a way to understand how much of a factor air pollution is. Which is a long way form the pure speculation you claim it is.

If you aren't prepared to accept that there may be 500 deaths per year how many deaths would you consider acceptable?

Get a grip.

I've got handy cheat to avoid bus-lane fines : don't drive in bus lanes.

Driving around sheffield is easy, there are just too many cars.

SCC's desperate attempts to keep motorists happy is costing us a fortune.
