Congestion charge in Sheffield

a quick bit-o-maths :

 

let's say that a taxi-driver shift lasts 8 hours, from 6pm on a saturday night till 2am on the sunday morning.

 

(probably when they make a big chunk of their money?)

 

they'll pick someone up near the city centre, and take them home to woodseats, 3 miles, 15mins each way = half an hour, they'll charge £7 (for driving 6miles)

 

by my maths, that's £14/hour (12miles) or £120 for the night (96 miles)

 

now, i'm sure i've under-estimated these numbers, so i'm going to round up. (they very well may pick up a fair in the opposite direction)

 

£180 for the night, for driving 150 miles, in 8 hours, in which time, they'll have used 4 or 5 gallons of fuel? (25 litres, £33)

 

let's triple(ish) those values to get our weekly numbers.

 

£540 / week Gross (we can ignore this value, it's not important)

 

£100 / week fuel (this is the important bit)

 

that's £450/month on fuel, you can lease a tesla for that. which'll cover the daily-distance on one charge.

 

with the money our driver is currently spending on fuel, he/she can already finance a brand-new tesla.

 

now let's consider that i haven't deducted any money from our drivers takings for vehicle maintenance/renewal, and the electric car is already clear winner, today.

 

add in a (future, possible) irritating £5/day charge for an ICE vehicle to enter the clean-air-zone and taxi-drivers will be queuing up to buy electric cars. no demo required.

Good money Saturday night rubbish money every other night,that is a fact nowadays.people only really go out on Saturday nights.Flag downs ?,very few nowadays.to get more work you need a radio (or app)=£100 a week,it all adds up to not much more than £5 an hour so to afford a £60k electric cab is a big ask.The idea is good the reality of owning one is beyond reach

One thing to be wary of especially with SCC is that once a charge is in place it is then liable to be increased. The congestion charge in London (although the SCC one is not called that) increased substantially from £5 in 2003 to £8 in 2005 and now stands at £11.50.

 

A quick question though..

 

Will low emission vehicles be exempt from this charge or is it for all vehicles in the designated areas?

If lorries etc are going to be charged £50 a day to enter and deliver to shops/businesses in the city center, based on a 5 day week that's an extra £250 per week to find. This is going to be passed on to the customer increasing the price of everything including bus and taxi fares. The city is already dying this will be the final nail in Sheffield city center's coffin.

City center businesses are already struggling because of high costs, poor access and parking, now our lunatic council are going to impose this ridiculous charge

Actually I did read it but it very vague as to how this pollution control will be implemented except by cameras and signs. For instance do all vehicles automatically have a class rating for their pollution levels that is on a database and can be easily checked by ANPR? If you look at the table in that link it just states:

 

"This table shows what charges in a potential Clean Air Zone could look like"

 

£40+ million for its setup would be better spent on upgrading or replacing current vehicles instead of giving it to SCC to waste as it pleases. As said when charges are given the go ahead then there is scope for them to rise in the future as it will simply be a case of "Its not working as we expected so we need more money."

What a ridiculous proposal. So buses have to pay it but private cars dont. What planet is our Council on.

 

The same one as the rest of us ?

 

For years, we’ve been complaining that t’council are punishing motorists, with:

 

bus lanes

bus gates,

increasing the operational hours of the above

one way streets

closing shortcuts ratruns

 

And now we’re complaining that t’council are punishing the biggest offenders :roll:

 

Sheffielders, eh ?

 

Surely buses are the solution to congestion and private cars the problem.

 

If buses are the answer, you must have asked a very daft question :hihi:

last time i looked, lorries are quite big, they can hold lots of stuff.

 

£50 divided by lots of stuff = not very much at all.

 

and that's assuming the lorry only makes one delivery per day.

Rather than say what's wrong with the idea you need to propose another solution to sort out the air quality. Doing nothing isn't an option anymore

Just what Sheffield shop keepers need another obstacle in the way of people who would like to spend money in Sheffield city centre ,the good access and easy parking of Barnsley city centre will be a welcoming host to them.
