Looking at WordPress Source Code..

Recommended Posts

1. Can you tell if the site was made on .com or .org?

2. Can you tell which theme is used?

Thanks so much for your help.

The theme usually has a copyright notice or credit of some sort in the info at the bottom, if not, it MAY be in the source code, - it depends if the theme creator has done it that way though..

and what do you mean, if the site was "made on .com or .org"?

.com and .org are TLD's (top level domains) and are nothing to do with the software used on the site...

Thanks for the reply.

.org is WordPress as we know it, .com is like out-of-the-box website builder. Someone does not need any knowledge in web design to create a website on WordPress.com.

Sorry, you're wrong.

Anyone can create a website in any way whatsoever, either with a content managing tool like Wordpress, or good old hand written HTML.

And then anyone can buy a domain name with any extension they want.

The website extension .COM, .ORG, .CO, .BIZ has no bearing on the former whatsoever.

.ORG was around long before wordpress.

The domain ".org" was one of the original top-level domains with com, us, edu, gov, mil and net, established in January 1985. It was originally intended for non-profit organizations or organizations of a non-commercial character that did not meet the requirements for other gTLDs.

He/she is talking about wordpress.com and wordpress.org. The .org site hosts the (free) Wordpress software. The .com site is also a wordpress site, but sells hosted Wordpress solutions.

To answer your question @eurovision: https://whatwpthemeisthat.com/ will tell you the theme.

You can find out if a site is hosted on wordpress.com by pinging the site (http://www.whatever.etc) to get the IP address, then nslookup the IP address (it will say [servername].wordpress.com if hosted on wordpress.com).

Shameless self plug: we host wordpress sites if you're looking for a host :)
