Charnock boundary

Recommended Posts

can anyone tell me the precise location of charnock , some of the estate agents are saying herdings houses are charnock , and some say Norton ave on the dentist side are charnock , I was always led to believe that charnock was on turning left onto white lane and the estate on the right or any house which was near the petrol station coming from the manor ie bowman drive side

If you take any notice of Google we all live in Norton.

Precise boundaries rarely exist anymore, with continuous development it can get hard to distinguish one area from the next.

On the 1906 Ordnance Survey 6 inch map the only mention of Charnock is Charnock Hall Farm. The only houses in that 'corner' of White Lane and Norton Avenue were on Smithfield Road, so my guess would be that the area now known as Charnock is the estate built on the fields which belonged to the farm.

The small estate at the Norton end of Bowman Drive was a separate development and was the married quarters for RAF personnel based at RAF Norton.

They will, to get the punters in. I'm surprised there isn't a "Charnock Village".

For me, the Charnock boundaries are White Lane and Norton Avenue. Anything on the other side of those roads is Base Green, Gleadless and Herdings.
