Best source for DDR3 memory?

Recommended Posts

Looking to upgrade existing rig from 4 Gb to 8 Gb so I can give more memory to VMs. Looking at the Manual for the Asus Mobo the highest it can take is 1866 MHz and can't remember what bandwidth current memory of 4Gb is so would probably need to do a complete upgrade of 8 Gb stick or 2 x 4 Gb - if memory (no pun!) serves me right I think it is something around the low end of the spectrum (no pun!) of 1500 MHz or thereabouts.

I bought some old DDR2 memory from CEX and had to get a refund - think I'll pass on that. ;)

I have 8gb Corsair vengeance pro 1866mhz for free

Having checked a downloaded version of Manual I think at 1866 MHz it will only support 6 Gb. And not entirely sure what the CPU supports:

Architecture: x86_64

CPU op-mode(s): 32-bit, 64-bit

Byte Order: Little Endian

CPU(s): 6

On-line CPU(s) list: 0-5

Thread(s) per core: 1

Core(s) per socket: 6

Socket(s): 1

NUMA node(s): 1

Vendor ID: AuthenticAMD

CPU family: 16

Model: 10

Model name: AMD Phenom II X6 1045T Processor

Stepping: 0

CPU MHz: 1094.665

CPU max MHz: 2700.0000

CPU min MHz: 800.0000

BogoMIPS: 5423.95

And it is so long since I bought the motherboard bundle with Processor the Manual quotes are unclear:

• AMD ® FXTM Series CPU on this motherboard supports up to DDR3 1866MHz as its

standard memory frequency.

• Due to the CPU specification, AMD ® 100 and 200 series CPUs support up to DDR3

1066MHz. With ASUS design, this motherboard can support up to DDR3 1333MHz.

• When overclocking, some AMD CPUs may not support DDR3 1600MHz or higher

frequency DIMMs.

On looking again the board supports 2000 Mhz with limitations:

Vendors Part No. Size

Apacer 78.AAGD5.9KD(XMP) 6GB(3 x 2GB)

G.SKILL F3-16000CL9D-4GBFLS(XMP) 4GB(2 x 2GB

G.SKILL F3-16000CL9D-4GBTD(XMP) 4GB(2 x 2GB)

G.SKILL F3-16000CL6T-6GBPIS(XMP) 6GB(3x 2GB)

KINGSTON KHX2000C9AD3T1K2/4GX(XMP) 4GB(2x 2GB)

KINGSTON KHX2000C9AD3W1K2/4GX(XMP) 4GB(2x 2GB)

Kingston KHX2000C9AD3T1K2/4GX(XMP) 4GB(2 x 2GB)

KINGSTON KHX2000C9AD3W1K3/6GX(XMP) 6GB(3x 2GB)

KINGSTON KHX2000C9AD3T1K3/6GX(XMP) 6GB(3x 2GB)

OCZ OCZ3XTEP2000C9LV4GK 4GB(2 x 2GB)

PATRIOT PVT36G2000LLK 6GB(3 x 2GB)

Looks like the Corsair that you offer won't match Magic_18  :

CORSAIR CMT6GX3MA1866C9(XMP) 6GB(3 x 2GB)

But thanks for the offer.

What mobo do you have and which CPU, it'll be easier to figure out.

8GB doesn't become 6GB just because of the clock speed.

Also faster memory will run at lower speeds so take that 8GB and get on with it :D

As above.

It may not run at top speed and should just default to a lower one in the bios.

I know it doesn't but that is all it will support at 1866 - I suspect that if I want 8 Gb it will be at 1600 MHz according to the table

The Mobo is Asus M5A78L-M/USB3 AMD Socket - I looked at some threads on Ebuyer where someone purchased Corsair Memory only to find out it only supported Intel Processor - AMD Phenom II x 6 (cores)

This is pain in the ass. Lol

I'm not bother with the speed of the ram as long as my Cpu and Motherboard will capable overclocking..

Pick this free ram from me anyway. Before someone else's taking it. It's your choice pal.

Keep in mind the table in the manual is only for memory that was available for them to test at the time the product was released. You can find a more up to date list here.

:hihi:

It can be hard work giving things away!!

If swarf doesn't have it, I'll nip over and pick it up... if that's ok.

Hi zach, if you are in need then feel free. I am beginning to wonder whether it is worth updating the RAM on the basis that recently my rig keeps reporting Chassis intrusion, even after updating to the last BIOS update of 2015 recently. There is no option in the BIOS to turn it off (I thought there was) and have read somewhere that some motherboards have an on/off switch. I have also cleared the CRTC by using the supplied jumper and still getting Chassis Intrusion message.

@Magic_18 - I really do appreciate the offer - I used to be indecisive - now I just don't know! :hihi:
