Psalter Lane restriction on lorries

Recommended Posts

More people live along Ecclesall Road than Psalter Lane so it's just as much residential.

1. do they? Psalter lane (as an alternative traffic route, merely bypasses E-R 'north', which is mostly shops/restaurants).

2. if so, then maybe we should consider weight /traffic restrictions on Ecclesall road.

Or their mates do!

who doesn't want a quieter street?

Dont buy a house on a main road then moan that traffic uses it!!

it's a bit of a stretch to describe psalter lane as a 'main road'...

Who doesn't want a quieter road isn't justification for councillors to specifically target roads where they have a vested interest (if that is indeed what has happened).

There seems to be little real justification for forcing HGV traffic on Ecclesall Rd, which if not directly residential, is a street busy with pedestrians (and existing traffic problems) and within a large residential area.

Im not getting the problem here?

Eccy Road is a main road designed for a high volume of traffic, its an arterial route into and out of the city, Pslater lane just isnt.

Im also struggling the see how people dont think the impact of HGVs on Psalter isnt much greater than the impact of this traffic using Eccy road.

Where there are buses every few minutes are a few extra HGVs really noticeable?

Me too to a great extent - Ecclesall Road links direct to the inner ring road - I'm pretty sure access from Psalter Lane is a lot more difficult.

According to the Council survey 2 in 100 vehicles on Psalter Lane were HGV- i.e. close to none of the traffic so why spend 200k dealing with a virtually non existent problem.

Even though we arent talking high numbers, extra HGV's (with long stopping distances) on Eccy Rd - a busy pedestrian area lined with pubs and bars on either side...sounds like a recipe for disaster. They ought to be diverting them ONTO Psalter Lane!!

Because each HGV has a huge impact?

Psalter Lane is a residential road with doors and houses opening up onto it. The same just cant be said for Eccy Road. People expect traffic on Eccy Road, they know they have to be careful when they cross or use one of the numerous crossings.

Actually there are NO properties that open directly on to Psalter Lane. They all have front gardens unlike Eccy Rd. And Psalter Lane has an adundance of trees unlike Eccy Rd. It's not a road safety issue but a pollution one. Eccy Rd gets worse and more people suffer.

the solution to air pollution isn't to direct HGV's along residential streets.

ok you are correct, you dont step directly onto the pavement but not far off.

Do you seriously think Psalter Lane is more suitable for HGVs?

I agree the pollution is bad, but its an existing issue.

If you are worried about pollution dont live near one the main routes into the city.

Psalter Lane is as suitable for HGVs as many other roads in the city- probably more so- theres deep grass verges and trees that act as barriers between the road and pavements on long stretches of it for pedestrian safety. I just dont understand why it is getting special treatment at vast expense. Help me understand!

This is just pointless micro-managing. Maybe they had some budget to use up

If you read the details, the project is about banning HGV's on four streets, not just Psalter Lane. The £200k is the cost for all four streets. Psalter Lane is estimated at £48k.

All of the proposals are responses to residents complaints about HGV's using inappropriate routes (to avoid congested principal routes in the case of Psalter Lane).

The full report is on this page: http://democracy.sheffield.gov.uk/ieDecisionDetails.aspx?ID=2109 in the attachments at the bottom. The technical evaluation is the Appendix.
