New laptop doesn't have cd drive

Recommended Posts

My friends new laptop has arrived without a cd drive. Can we use the old laptop to act as a cd drive so that we can put her software onto the new laptop. Also will a 8 gb flashdrive be big enough to make a recovery disc

Not as such, well not easily anyways. Best bet would be to either buy a USB DVD-ROM drive. Or insert the disk in old laptop, copy contents of CD to flash drive, then transfer across to new one.

Or you can simply download and reinstall the software from the HDD

You could try sharing the DVD drive of the computer on the network, I've never tried it so I don't know what problems you may encounter.

Thus you have the old computer and new computer connected to the network

Could end up very tricky.

You can get usb cd drives fir about £20 , might be easiest.

I think Mikes10 solution is the most straightforward one (and cost effective too!). In respect of using a Flash disk, if this is in respect of putting old software on the new Notebook, will it be compatible with Windows 10? If it is a CD then an 8 Gb Flash drive is more than enough, BUT there could be protection software on the CD to prevent such shenanigans … Back to Mikes10 solution. ;)
