.cab files also seem to be quite sensitive to dodgy memory. Had similar problems many times with older computers which were fixed by swapping the memory sticks out for some spares.

I have now tried, swapping the memory and combining the memory, but still no joy!

I had similar problems with my daughter's pc last year (just before building a new one) - turned out that there were old style IDE cables, 300W rather than 150W, attached to the writer drive.

SImple switch fixed it, well, fixed that one problem out of many........!

Bit of a long shot but check the windows installation service san't been disabled somehow. You could try manually starting it too and see if that helps.

Are you running SP2? A new version of the installer was in that, try running windows update and check there are no patches etc you don't have.
