The Three Tuns

It's not going to be a 'great' pub for me is it if they don't serve what I like. You don't seem to be understanding the simple fact that not serving a beer I want to drink makes it for me, the opposite of great.

I understand - it's just a shame for you - you have such specific tastes you miss out.

I don't feel I'm 'missing out' if what I'm supposedly 'missing' isn't what I want. I don't think I'm 'missing out' on great seafood restaurants because I'm not keen on fish, I'm not 'missing out' on great jazz bands because I hate jazz, and I'm not 'missing out' on a pub if I choose not to go there because they offer nothing I want to drink

I think the point is that having a drink isnt the only reason to go to pub.

There are plenty of times when i go to the pub and dont have a drink, and there are plenty of times when i go to places which arent my choice. I dont not go because i dont like the drink/ food that would be childish.

Personally my pub of choice depends on the occasion and who im with and again thats not defined by the drink on offer, although it obviously has a part to play.

Regarding the Tuns i never understood why it didnt do more to tempt the lunchtime trade.

As The Fonz says above - of course it's different if it's a pub - because its not just the drink is it?

If it was there wouldn't be much point going at all and you may aswell just order in what you like from the internet and drink it in your armchair.

IMO it's not the only reason to go to the pub but it is an essential factor. I enjoy going to the pub (alone or with company) in a different way to enjoying beer at home (either alone or with company), but for me the drink offer is essential, I wouldn't go to a pub with nothing I want to drink to socialise any more than I'd want to meet up in McDogfood. Fortunately good beer is far more widely available now than a decade ago, so there's even less reason to go somewhere with nothing to offer on that front.

Exactly so your particular taste in beer excludes you from going to places that have lots of other good attributes but not a specific beer product you like.

It all depends what your primary reason is for visiting a pub. For me it is most definitely the pub. I would always prefer to drink real ales or craft beers or something interesting, but I also love to visit pubs that I like regardless of the drinks on offer. That's the main thing if I go in pubs in other towns. The beer might be good or bad THAT DAY, but the key thing for me is the pub experience - for example perhaps it's been a pub for a hundred years or more, perhaps the architecture and internal fittings are worth a look.

OK if the drinks are no good it won't sustain the interest for repeated visits, I understand that point. But the Three Tuns doesn't have to try that hard to be a good pub. So I'm sure it will come good again.

The Three Tuns is a lovely pub in the sense of the building and the history. This is so much more important than the drinks on offer on any given day. It used to be a Tetley's pub and back then I would happily drink only cask Tetley's in there if it was well-kept. I wasn't bothered about having 12 other choices of beer/porter/real cider etc. Times change though, so I'm not your typical punter.

Absolutely my point.

Another point to mention here is Paradise Square. If it was ever to be redeveloped as a quality drink/food/leisure area like Leopold Sq then the Three Tuns would be a crucial part of it. We live in hope.

Absolutely my point.

But your point and Cyclone's are completely different. Cyclone doesn't want to visit a pub to admire the decor or congratulate the landlord on the absolutley perfectly pulled pint of Moonshine. He want's other things, a wider and better choice of beer.

If he doesn't like the drinks on offer then he'll hardly sit around drinking beer he doesn't like enthusing about the pictures on the wall, the historical location or the general ambiance.

Different people want different things.

Exactly - but they will miss out on that aspect of a pub experience.

But you cant 'miss out' on something that doesnt matter to you.

As Taxman says everyone is different, has different preferences and priorities.

I would imagine there are people that wouldnt go in a pub if it doesnt have a jukebox, or a big screen, or a pool table. Just because a person bases their nights out on different things to another person it doesnt mean one is right and one is wrong.
