Motorcycle wheel Re-Spoke in Sheffield?

Recommended Posts

I am currently restoring a Motorbike.

The bike is a Suzuki DR 125 SM. 2010 Model.

Is there anywhere in Sheffield that can Re-Spoke Motorcycle wheels?

I dare say i could get the spokes off the net and DIY.. but i wouldn't be sure to get the wheel true/balanced.

Before anyone mentions 'Wire wool and elbow grease'..Gives me nightmares just contemplating that so don't say it.:|

I need a quick and easy solution...If it exists?

Thank you.:)

If you are restoring the bike rather than needing it for work tomorrow morning, it's not the hardest job if you have patience and remember that truing a wheel is side to side as well as top to bottom and front to back.

I dare say i could replace the spokes one by one...

Tightening up as far as they will go..

I'm still not going to do it.!

Sid Smith doesn't do much apart from cost an arm and a Leg for a Nut.

I'm going to take the wheel to.....

I took mine to RTT Moto, 2 Hoyland Rd, Hoyland, Barnsley S74 0LY, Tel: 01226 743287. They re-spoked my Virago wheels in stainless as I think polishing spokes is like punishment, and the chrome was well past it. Great service.

There is a specialist motorcycle wheel re-spoker near Sandtoft of J1 M180

.

If you're really struggling I'll get you the number this week when I pass, or I'll give you directions.

Easy enough to find.

*UPDATE*
Well, after a while, i have found a solution to my little problem!

I decided to remove a couple of spokes from the wheel and try various methods to clean them.
Removing 2 spokes at a time shouldn't alter the wheel's trueness .(I hope!)

Doing this on an 8 year old motorcycle wasn't easy , a few of the 'nipples' were stuck fast , i had to use mole grips to hold the spoke while undoing the 'nipple'.!

My first thought was to put the spoke in my cordless drill and use some metal polish and a cloth, this didn't work at all !  I then thought to use some 'Wet & Dry' sand paper or wire wool, but this would result in taking the protective chrome layer off and make the problem even worse down the line..!  so i couldn't do that.

I decided to make a small bath out of a milk carton and placed my spokes in, i then added some 'cilit bang' to cover the spokes and left them to soak overnight.

This did absoultely nothing..!!  By now i was getting frustrated, i searched on-line for advice and found that there are a million and one ways to clean chrome wheel spokes..!! After reading page after page and watching many video's, nothing was any use.

Because of recent events, nipping to B&Q and asking for some super strong 'Acid' wasn't really an option.
So, back to the cupboard under the sink i went.

Right at the back i found a bottle of 'Sarsons' white distilled malt vinegar..!
I thought, what the hell, lets give it one last try.!

WOW, this stuff is amazing..!  As before i placed my spokes in a bath of this vinegar.

Within minutes bubbles were forming, AT LAST, after weeks and weeks of trying, a reaction was actually taking place..!! (This is the closest thing to a 'Revelation' iv'e ever had!! )

I left them over night and hey presto, about 95% of the black stuff had been disolved.

With a quick polish using some 'Autosol' metal polish my spokes are once again like new and with no damage to the original chrome coating.

(I'd like to know what causes chrome wheel spokes to turn black, is it a build up of carbon?, that's what it looks like... it's not your everyday muck and grime, it's more like a coating.)

Well, it's only taken me 3 months....! Here's me 50+ and thought i knew how to clean metal.... i'm still chuffin learning about it.!
Blast....Only 70 more spokes to go..........!

STEEL CITY.....One would hope that there was at least ONE Metallurgist here who would understand the process of this kind of stuff...?

Or have they all left and gone?

The only corrosion I've ever seen on chrome is rust.

Are you sure that they weren't black chromed spokes which you have now stripped the chrome off and left you with polished nickel spokes! 😉
