taxman   12 #6037 Posted November 16, 2018 When this deal fails things will move very, very quickly. By that time, the government will have been forced to publish the no deal emergency provisions and when we are being told that the police and army will be put on standby in case of looting or civil unrest, food will be in short supply, NHS operations and investigations will be cancelled, imported goods will be rotting at the ports or stuck in queues from Dover to the outskirts of London, drugs are being rationed, people will start to wonder what the hell is going on.  Remember only a small proportion of leave voters were outright cranks and racists. Most voted for it because it sounded like a good idea. When faced with the reality that the fifth richest economy is effectively going on a war footing they will start to wonder exactly what the hell is going on.  By that stage, remaining in the EU is going to seem like a very attractive proposition.  But.......£350million per week for the NHS, and no more blooming Polish people taking our jobs...Surely that's worth fighting for
 Share this content via...

Top Cats Hat   10 #6040 Posted November 17, 2018 Well, you say that, but even the Daily Mail seems to be on board with this one, a glowing interview with Theresa May... even the panel on Newsnight seemed surprised.  It all comes down to the vote in Parliament though.  If Labour sticks to its six tests and votes against the deal, they will have the 10 DUP, 35 SNP, 12 LIb Dems, 4 Plaid Cymru, 1 Green and up to 40 Tory Brextremists with them.  That is 364 votes against to 278 for. Even with Kate Hoey, John Mann and Frank Field voting with May that is 361 to 281 and I suspect that as an Ulster Unionist, Kate Hoey will vote against the deal along with the DUP (who she now sits with in the House of Commons.)  Even if May scares the DUP into supporting her or risk a Corbyn government that still makes it 352 to 290.  The charm offensive is going to have to be mighty to persuade over 30 labour MPs to defy the whip and vote with her. Has there ever been a so called popular movement that has been unable to field a leader from its own ranks, and instead has allowed one of the opposition to advance their cause. It’s a crazy situation . Who is your champion Brexiteers.Farage,Davis,IDS,Johnson.??? Perhaps Gove.Hes not quite fallen off the fence yet. The trouble is different MPs will vote against the draft withdrawal agreement for different reasons. One honest MP will vote against it because they don't believe the agreement respects the democratic referendum vote while a dishonest MP will vote against the agreement hoping the democratic decision the UK people made will be reversed as a consequence of the draft withdrawal agreement being rejected by parliament. woodview   10 #6044 Posted November 17, 2018 perhaps they will vote in favour of it because it represents the only alternative which doesn't burn the economy to a cinder Well, will enough Labour mp's vote for it? Obviously Keir Starmers six dreamer tests will never be met by any deal. If Labour vote down a deal that is as good as it's going to get, I think they would suffer badly if a GM followed. Most people vote for good honest reasons. Different people have different priorities, experiences and hopes. In most cases, it doesn't make them 'wrong' they simply have a different view, built up through different processes. They vote accordingly. Black and white thinking is, unfortunately, too commonplace, especially online.
 Share this content via...

Black and white thinking is, unfortunately, too commonplace, especially online. You make a good point by mentioning the word 'wrong' I have always thought there was no wrong or right answer on the EU referendum ballot paper. If the whole country had accepted the democratic referendum vote then I truly believe there would be a better deal on offer then what exists now. As a nation we have shot ourselves in the foot by arguing amongst ourselves after our democratic people made their decision and handed the advantage in the Brexit negotiations on a plate to the EU.  On another point the five pro leave cabinet ministers who haven't resigned and who are trying to convince Mrs May to go back to the EU to renegotiate a more favourable EU withdrawal agreement deserve much credit and support. These five MPs are acting in the nation's interest unlike what Mrs May appears to be doing.
 Share this content via...
