Old Gas Club land to become a Lidl Supermarket?

Recommended Posts

Any news on this? I see it’s all rubble there now where it’s been knocked down.

I heard the residents of Stannington Road have got a petition up to try and stop Lidl .

That hasn’t happened anywhere else where a Lidl has been built, so why would it happen here?

In the village where I currently live the local shops have seen an increase in business. They're the more specialised type such as DIY and hardware shops, the charity shop does a good turnover too and that's because LIDL built here.

Without surveying, I can only assume that because people don't have to travel all the way into town for their shopping they're staying local and spending more in local shops, in the case of the hardware shop rather than going to Wickes/B&Q etc.

And if it was being built in a slightly further away area they probably would be bothered. Classic NIMBYism

I'm not surprised.

It's seven years since I left Sheffield and it was a bottleneck then.

A supermarket there would be chaos for commuting.

Supermarkets open early and Malins Bridge morning chaos can last upto 9.45am, try it sometime get amongst the school run. Then you have the same experience late afternoon.

Maybe if parents weren't driving their kids to school we wouldn't have such a problem there then?

I'm all for the Lidl. It'll be nice and handy and I think it's a great shop. Yeah it could be in a better place, but then I'd probably want it slightly closer to me if I had the option.

What a daft decision.

Which decision would that be? As far as I can tell nothing has been decided.

Living on Stannington Road with all its traffic problems I resent being called a NIMBY. Apart from the obvious reasons to prevent Lidl building, has anyone thought of the implications for the little Malin Bridge Mini Market, only yards away? These are peoples livelihoods we are talking about.

Plan should be accepted, it'll be good for the locals that don't have cars and will be useful for Hillsborough locals, especially when they demolish parts of the Hillsborough exchange shopping centre.

As for shops plenty of charities, nail bars etc cashing in on the empty units..... Far foods prime example rent increased and they shut up shop, now to be a Sue Ryder. Its business rates and high rents that are shutting shops down not competing store, the council are bleeding them dry.:loopy:

It won't, it's just the nimbys

The council neither set rent nor rates..how many more times!:hihi:

the aldi and lidl are both expanding very fast these days and offer great value and SCC are only intrested in more rates.

The thing is if you live on Stannington Rd you don’t want Lidl there, but if you don’t live on Stannington Rd you do.!

Plenty of people who don't live on Stannington Road understand how unsuitable the location is for a supermarket - as can be seen from the responses to the planning application: https://planningapps.sheffield.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=neighbourComments&keyVal=PC5T9LNYJ9900
