Supertram staff to strike..

Recommended Posts

People in Sheffield are generally untrustworthy, which is why we can't have any nice things. See also: ofo bikes which are apparently about to pull out of our city, which will undoubtedly hit the national press. Next time someone overlooks this dump of a town and invests in Leeds or Manchester remember all of this.

You ever thought of running for Lord Mayor of Sheffield ?

Or Mayor of South Yorkshire (whatever the official title is) ?

With that inclusive and open-minded attitude, you’d get my vote.

Why not, if the current lord mayor can do it I'm sure I could, at least I'd respect the history of the position and not make bold claims I couldn't uphold.

And I've probably already got more power than the current 'mayor' of south Yorkshire and I'm just some idiot venting on a forum! Lol!

When planning industrial action, it is normal for any union to target a time that will cause the maximum impact on the employer in order to try and persuade them to settle. By selecting this weekend I am sure that their intention is that this will bring the employers to the table and offer what they want, not to inconvenience their wage payers ( the public).

That is my take on their reasons for selecting this time. The union can then lay the blame on management for failing to settle and feel they have the moral high ground. In some cases this may work, but, stagecoach will never back down to union demands and will pay massive sums to ensure buses are brought in from wide and far at that time to undermine the unions action.

Result: Impasse

Whilst I agree fully with what you say, there will be a backlash because you are not allowed to say it here.

Everything in Sheffield is great, its just businesses get it wrong all the time. :hihi:

I think you are right about an impasse, as this could rumble on as len mccluskey at Unite is bragging they have a 35m strike fund.

A lot of assumptions .

Most employees bitch about their management and forget they’re employed to do a job and have a job description... and that their managers have a job description and are also managed....

Maybe the recruitment day is so they actually attract the right kind of people with the right attitude and mix of customer skills... maybe managers have managed people properly and weeded our the lazy , those with bad attitudes or those who take the **** with sickness

Spoken like a true manager! You need to remember that employees tend to <removed> if they are treated like that. Give and take as you will. Like Mr Branson is famous for saying, if you treat your staff right, they will treat the customers right and do their jobs properly.

If it is however micromanaged like many businesses these days, they tend to have an agenda and <removed> about things regarding the company to everyone, even the customers. Staff morale will also be low as will work productivity and attitude etc.

Strike dates have to be notified a certain period in advance for them to be legal. They would have had no idea when organising the dates if they would have still been in the tournament or not. In any case it's more disruption to have it on a weekday to annoy the commuters.

true but they knew that the world cup was on and games were scheduled even if most of us would never seriously imagined England would have still been involved.

However you were being too literal I was simply making the point that they of course will chose the time of maximum disruption

Which would be a weekday, not a weekend with no football or other big local events on.

In the long run this will cost the users of the tram more, it's only a matter of time before there prices go up if they give them a pay rise- one which I don't support as at the end of the day they really shouldn't need conductors anyway. Do you see conductors on the tube? I suppose it's mainly needed because Sheffield is full of scummers who won't pay, but it's still ridiculous.

If these people don't like working for what they're on they have the option of working elsewhere for more, if they can. As they are striking for pennies I'd suggest they've already found their level. This kind of behaviour belongs in the past.

Since the trams first started Regional Railways and its successors (currently Northern Rail) have hoovered up the brightest and best (sort of!) from the tram staff.

Railway Guards earn about twice what ST pay so those that are left behind are quite literally the "less good" staff.

I would suggest they are lucky to be on anything above the NMW to be honest.

Presumably this is being run by scabs? It amazes me how they can pay all these extra drivers and buses from Manchester, and not paid the pay rise for their own workers. Like Busdriver1 said previously, Stagecoach are stubborn. :hihi:

Ah well, at least the bus operators can reap some of the rewards and cash in from these actions and traffic should be more free flowing through many places thanks to the trams not running!

Further to the 30 minute frequency there, they are currently operating at a 15 minute frequency but are unable to guarantee that will continue through the day.

Could be people not in union, training dept or managers running these trams.

Souter and the people he has working for him are well known for wasting excessive amounts of money to try to cover strikes or break strikes as hes not a fan of unions.

Out if interest, what does a tram driver and conductor earn?

They’ve been advertising for conductors for months so I’m guessing it’s not well paid?
