Shops 'bagless' policies

So - Morrisons stop supplying individual plastic bags for fruit and veg but just put all their produce in plastic bags instead! Biggest daft idea is supplying bunches of bananas pre-packed in plastic - why? It's not as though you even eat the skin which is nature's protective layer. Trying to buy loose fruit and veg is almost impossible.

What's wrong with them supplying paper bags? None of the supermarkets supply paperbags and it's daft.

And for bananas you pay more per kilogram, too. Very convenient. They still offer loose ones though.

We follow everything the Yanks do, except the use of paper bag -why?

Was in Prague in November, called into a "Lidl" whilst there and they only had Paper bags, why not here?

When Safeway (remember them?) occupied the current Waitrose site on Ecclesall Road, they had the option of plastic or paper bags at the checkout. The plastic bags had handles but the brown paper ones did not.

I also recall that Tesco used to sell (and I used to buy) boxes of greaseproof paper sandwich bags, whereas now they only do plastic.

Just take them out of the bags and weigh them, people power can change things!

But paper bags are made from wood pulp. We are allegedly knocking down the trees that supply our oxygen. So paper bags are not a solution to the problem, are they?.

Hmm. If only there was a way to replace the trees that were used to make paper bags...

Its a different problem, cure one problem and create another - climate change.

If we started using paper instead of plastic, for everything, how many more trees would need to be harvested?

Our rain forests are in decline, they are a very important aspect of our eco-system.

The trees that are used to make paper bags aren’t coming from the rainforest. The rainforest is mainly cleared for cattle ranching, not the paper industry.

Your overall point is correct however, using paper bags over plastic does have a knock on effect with Co2 emissions. I can be corrected on the exact figure, but it’s something like it would take 7 times as many trucks to transport 100,000 paper bags as it would 100,000 plastic bags (which are thinner and lighter).

I used to that at ASDA but the checkout machines no longer allow you to weigh individual fruit/veg items.
