Baron99 Â Â 779 #13 Posted June 5, 2018 When the religion controls its followers' behaviour, choices and social lives by using threats (which JW's do), then it is indeed sinister. Â Isn't control the basis of all religions? Usually by some elite who live a wealthy lifestyle?
 Share this content via...
Top Cats Hat   10 #14 Posted June 5, 2018  She keeps ranting about Freemasons as though there's something sinister going on with them She also keep ranting that people need Christ in their lives, it seems she's left one cult and gone straight into another.  It was quite depressing to watch the Waco siege anniversary programme in February and see that one man who escaped the burning compound and a woman whose husband and children had all burned to death in the fire both still believed that David Koresh was the messiah.  That's why I take with a pinch of salt the claims of ex cult members. If you were hard of thinking enough to get involved in the first place you are not exactly very mentally stable.
 Share this content via...
carosio   186 #15 Posted June 5, 2018 (edited) Tell that to the 100s, possibly 1000s of children abused by cult members who were then told not to report it.  When the religion controls its followers' behaviour, choices and social lives by using threats (which JW's do), then it is indeed sinister. In comparison with other religious zealots, they're hardly a threat to world peace; however excessive control from the top (as in the Catholic Church) doesn't enhance their reputation by suppressing wrong-doings by the members. Longcol   597 #16 Posted June 5, 2018 There never used to be that many as I recall? Are there more now?  Didn't they used to have an annual shindig at Hillsborough and pack the North Stand out?  Biggest crowds they got there in the mid '70's. carosio   186 #18 Posted June 5, 2018 Why is it only the men that can wear trousers in the Jehovah sect ,strange that in't it.  They adhere to a conservative mode of dress (another one is the Amish), men in trousers (smart suits), women in dresses/skirts. Some things reminiscent of the 19th century, others of biblical times (patriarchal household).
 Share this content via...
Halibut   12 #19 Posted June 5, 2018 There's nothing sinister about JWs, they're just very tightly controlled from the head office in New York. Basically they are Christians in the general sense of the word, but hold a literal interpretation of the Scriptures (if it's not literal, what is it?).  Re my bold - if it isn't literal, it's interpretive. Waldo   96 #21 Posted June 5, 2018 When the religion controls its followers' behaviour, choices and social lives by using threats (which JW's do), then it is indeed sinister.  People often don't realise the insidious subtle ways in which they're being manipulated and controlled. The 'best' control over someone, is when the person believes they are making their own decisions; and in a way, they are, only they're choosing to do the things they've been conditioned (by someone else) to choose.  For example, a suicide cult where people are choosing to die of their own free will, or members of more mainstream religions who choose to wear religious clothing; they think it's their decision, but someone else has conditioned their thinking... The clothes we wear, things we do, like sunday dinners etc, tv shows we like etc etc  its all learnt from our past, our parents and families, our forbears
 Share this content via...
