Its not "coming to" anything.

I am sorry to hear of the two very unfortunate and upsetting incidents involving those close to you which occured. I hope they never have to go through it again and the Police sort out the first one particularly.

However, lets not pretend that either of those crimes could not and did not happen before. Cities unfortunately always have had and always will have crime. A criminal element across society has been present in every generation.

What's changed now is the speed, frequency, methods and dramatising of its reporting which in turn has fuelled a perception of crime ever increasing and cities becoming less and less safe.

Sorry to hear that but in my experience its pretty safe.

I work in town and sometimes socialise in town too,so am in town about 5 days/evenings a week.

Only once had an issue in the last 10 years when I got my mobile phone stolen from my pocket but I got it back.

Only times I would avoid is very late on Friday and Saturday night in certain areas.

A few beggars are quite aggressive but have never seen things get physical.

There's a thread about beggars and they should be kicked out,if only one tries to rob someone Its one too many, being lenient with these people only encourages them to take a step further.

Its a sad fact of life, but compared to a few years ago I very rarely go into the centre of town now after 6pm at night, and most especially not on a Friday or Saturday night ... its downright dangerous and all this seems to have evolved in just the last few years ...

drunken young yobs and yobesses, and some even older than middle age, thiefs, muggers, agressive beggars and homeless people always sat near ATMs, ATMS themselves being rigged to scan your cards by east eurpopeans, prostitutes, drug dealers and very aggressive and forward homeless addicts ....

No I most definitely avoid it now - if I do go out at all its just in my local area and even that is restricted hours .... a very sad state of affairs the world has become, not just Sheffield , but most cities in the UK now since Austerity started after the 2008 crisis :-(

dont talk wet, ALL towns and cities have issues with crime and violence and its not just the last few years, it was the same when i lived in sheff in the 80s, early 90s (i got mugged twice, including once walking home after a night out, but i had 1000s of better nights where i didnt)

Last friday night i went out in Middlesbrough and it was perfectly fine (and yes Boro also has issues with immigrants, crime, chavs and violence, including town centre bars (which is where we went))

Im sorry but I have never read such a load of rot all my life.

All these problems since 2008?? I dont think so.

You make it sound as if before so called "austerity" the world was a happy utopia with no homeless, no drunken behaviour, no beggars, no criminal activity and no poverty.

I think you actually need to get out there instead of hiding in your tin foil paranoia. You might see that the city centre is not some big scary monster.

You might see that after 6pm on an average day there is not some underword that arises. In reality the city is filled with people just going about their business working, studying, socialising and for many actually living there.

Get out at a weekend and you might actually see that instead of this violent drunken warzone you think, in reality the vast MAJORITY of people are simply out for the night enjoying a a few bars, a restaurant, a pub, a theatre show or some other entertainment venue.

Yes, there are of course a small minority of people who go too far but they get dealt with. That is why there is always the police presence and security. Yes there may well be a handful of criminals but that has been in existance since year dot.

It really does worry me that the false impression portrayed by exaggerated gossip and media outlets sensationalising every piddling little story has created people with feelings just like yours. Its absolute nonsense.

How can you seriously think like that?

exactly, its purely a case of wrong place wrong time if you get targeted, and sadly theres not a lot you can do.

I do keep my wits about me, keep an eye around, if i need to use a card cash machine i try to do it where there isnt people hovvering, i dont flaunt my phone or cash in public, and i try to keep clear of subways etc

Just common sense really, and in most cases it works

I see very little difference from the 60s and 70s when I was kicking around the town pubs and clubs.

There were plenty of scuffles in and around pubs ,particularly around kicking out time but usually a few coppers around to send you on your way.

I do fear that there are more knife carriers around, and less visible police to give a deterrent and a feeling of security to the public.

That is one definite effect of austerity.

Come on GinTree a bit over the top no where near has bad .We tend to paint our past times a bit rosy . When we get older we do feel a bit more insecure but things have not changed that much in town . The introduction of inner city dwelling is welcome and will bring more life at night , hopefully for the better .
