I would be surprised if there was a demand. The only possible use to my mind would be if it included a park and ride site. That would be more use than nunnery square. 

A train service of a certain frequency and quality would create it's own demand.

 

Most houses in Waverley have 1 or 2 cars because the existing public transport infrastructure is either poor or non-existent. Of course there will always be people who own cars and perhaps even moved to Waverley specifically to live out the suburban 'dream', but any good public transport service will encourage people to leave those cars at home more.

I was kind of excited about this announcement - until I realised it was only the award of £50k in funds for a proposal - and most likely another token gesture by the government to the north that won’t come to fruition - they’d happily throw 10s of £millions.  at a new tube stop in London though.

 

similar to the stars front page about £20m of funding for castlegate which is a pittance really for what needs to be done down there.

Waverley will be planned with some park and ride capacity. An hourly service wouldn't be enough to attract most users, particularly with cars, to use it.

 

Compare with stations at Chapeltown and Dore. Chapeltown has 2 trains an hour to Sheffield, one from  Leeds and one from Huddersfield. Dore has an hourly service to Sheffield from Manchester, with additional hourly morning services to and evening services from Manchester. Chapeltown's last assessed passenger numbers were higher than for Dore and part of that must be attributable to the more frequent service. 

 

Waverley's likely opening hourly service would be on the Lincoln line, a less attractive destination for most users than either Leeds or Manchester. Consequently it would be likely to attract similar passenger  number to Darnall -which is not very many. Of course an extra hourly service to Chesterfield  on a new route from Sheffield  via Barrow Hill might permit 2 stops per hour at Waverley.  That would put up the cost a lot, and would run into pathing issues.

The national rail review is being released this week and The Mail reposts the Stocksbridge line is slated to reopen.

 

High Speed Two apparently will stop in the East Midlands ,no Yorkshire link

Wishful thinking that the Stocksbridge line is close to reopening when the feasibility study can hardly have been started yet.

The newspaper speculation is referring to the Integrated Rail Plan which will be published on Thursday.

What is bad news for most  is good news for Sheffield.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak has axed HS2 eastern route to Leeds and the proposed new Manchester/Bradford/Leeds route.

Instead electrification will take place between Sheffield and Derby, Birmingham, Leeds and Kettering (already done to London). Possibly also  to Doncaster and Nottingham. 

As MML electrification was well into its detailed planning before cancellation this project could start soon.

Two new fast lines will be built (to relieve congestion) between Birmingham and East Midlands Parkway and between Moorthorpe and Leeds with big upgrades likely through South Yorkshire.

Ah yes.  In that case then there is the question of what happens at the other end of the line, in order to get into "Midland" it now requires a reversal somewhere near the tram depot, I cant imagine they are going to reopen "Victoria".

Victoria isn't going to reopen as an all-singing, all-dancing central station again, no, but it's not inconceivable that it could re-open as a small station.

 

It's connectivity out there at the far end of the Wicker on it's own wouldn't be great though. No train link to Midland, no tram link, limited bus services outside. As I said in a post above, infrastructure like this often creates its own demand (you'd see a growth in new developments around Victoria), but it would be limited without connections to the rest of the city centre/transport system.
