Sheffield Council boss earns more than Prime Minister.

Recommended Posts

John Mothersole the chief executive at Sheffield Council earns £184,283 per year while the prime minister who one would think has the hardest job in the U.K earns £40,000 less.

Up to 18 others who work for our cash starved council all earn around £100,000 or more so what kind of message do these massive salaries send to the workers who try to make ends meet on salaries of around £15,000 one asks.

Apart from that we are told that care Holmes must close along with many other facilities due to Government cut backs.

Cut backs for some it seems.

The prime minister 'earns' less ? I wouldn't pay that woman in Rocking Horse dung !

What would you consider to be a reasonable salary for Mr Mothersole and why, given that he's paid more than the PM?

I would say about £100-£150k for the position- I don’t know enough about him as an individual.

What do you think?

I'd say £100k maximum. I don't think we would get anyone of less quality for £100k plus than we're paying now. We may even get someone younger with fresh ideas & a bit more drive & determination, who realises that they are in charge of the country's 4th largest city, not an individual who oversaw the Sevenstones debacle, where he kept making hollow threats of deadlines to Hammersons which ultimately came to nothing & also bore responsibility for the elction day blunder of 2010.

Mothersole received £209,508 in 2011-12, Inc. pension contributions. The latest figures show he receives £219,000.

The first link refers to the GMB's assessment of SCC's workers' pay.

that would be the GMB that advised its members that the proposed pay deal/cut would be the best they were going to get if they were that bothered they should have advised their members to vote against the proposals

Newsflash - the chief exec of plenty of council areas in England are paid more than the PM. I would wager most, actually.

What would people say is a reasonable salary for someone in John Mothersoles position?

A Performance related salary.

So he owes Sheffield about £60k.

Some are on over £120,000 so just average it out among the eighteen high trouserers . As to social services who knows .

I'm not sure where you get the figure of 18 employess of SCC earning £120k plus from - the Star article I linked to clearly said 7.

Also I'm not sure why you think the council have passed all responsibility for everything to Amey. Amey have a contract with SCC to repair and maintain highways. The responsibility of SCC, like all metropolitan borough councils, extends far beyond that.

Thanks for showing that. In real terms his income has been static then since 2011-12 and probably declined a little.

That is an opinion that I do not agree with. Let's leave it at that.

They should. Have you contacted him directly about these situations and followed the appropriate reporting procedures? Also - is this not saying similar to what I said? The man has a lot of responsibilities (you touch on a mere drop in the ocean) - to get a better performing CEO there is only one route - pay more.

I have tried reporting problems directly to Mr. Mothersole previously, but all that happens is that they get passed to a manager in the service concerned. We support many people to complain about these issues and the responses are generally poor. Sometimes the response is ok or even good but too often people are told to just repeat the process and sometimes the complaint is just not responded to. Not good enough, and it's not reasonable to expect hundreds of people to go all the way to the Ombudsman, not least because the Ombudsman service doesn't have the resources to deal with everything that could end up with them if everyone pursued it. Also, complaints very rarely lead to the underlying reason for the poor service being addressed. Any good service learns from complaints to do things better - in Sheffield, the complainant may get a resolution but the underlying issues remain. SCC has a very poor customer service culture and in a top-down organisation we both know that it is the CEO who needs to set the culture.

I find very offensive the idea that 219K is not enough to get the basics right. The people of Sheffield deserve much better.

And I'll repeat the point of my previous post... no they don't. The Conservative Party and its media supporters only started pushing that complete and utter lie because they wanted a way to justify the cuts and redundancies their austerity policies were causing, as well as redirecting the anger for job losses onto others, hence the creation of the 'fat-cat council leaders paid more than PM' narrative.

And the public laps it up.
