Best places to go out if you don't drink

Recommended Posts

I often find it hard to find places that appeal to me as often in clubs and bars, the main source of entertainment for people is alcohol. I have nothing against it, but just often find myself saying no to invitations to these places as I can feel a bit out of place. As a non-drinker, is there any good places in Sheffield to go for fun?

There's an alcohol free dance party at Sharrow Junior School this Friday 7-11.30pm. Everywhere can be enjoyed without alcohol though.

I know lots of people who don't drink that go to Rassam's Creamery at the bottom of London Road. I think they're open quite late as well.

I can really relate to that, even though I'm not a non-drinker. I can't help noticing that lots of blokes thesedays go out to pubs and bars to seemingly get totally out of their head on booze. Same with some girls too. I've never really understood that.

Don't get me wrong, a few years ago when I was in my teens I had a fair few nights when I'd drank a bit too much and was the worse for it. Like getting home and feeling the room spinning and on some occasions going to the toilet and being sick. But getting completely paralytic whilst out in public and not being able to walk or talk or get myself home? Never. Never once have I been like that.

I saw some guys in a bar I was in the other week. Nice looking young lads, nice trendy clothes, put it this way, I think most young girls would have taken a second look at them, they were attractive. But within less than an hour of being in the pub, they were totally off their heads, shouting, staggering about, one kid fell over and another went outside and was being sick in the garden. I remember seeing one girl go out to help him. Flippin' eck she was lovely - like a model she was. I don't know if he was her boyfriend but all I know is, he was too ill to appreciate her if he was.

Now, I enjoy a drink, maybe two or even three if I'm not driving, but I've always been conscious that it's better to remain sober and able to hold a conversation with an attractive member of the opposite (or same if you're that way inclined) sex, rather than be sick on them.

But maybe that's just old fashioned?

If you enjoy live music try calling in at a folk night or open mic night, there's loads about. Most musicians and singers are friendly decent types who enjoy talking about what they do. Most will have alcohol being consumed, but it's not the focal point and no-one will look at you askance if you're drinking soft drinks or coffee.

You’re in the wrong era, back in the 60’s the beer was so bad in the clubs and discos, that practically everyone with functioning taste buds opted for soft drinks.

Again - a pretty open ended question - what is your idea of fun?

If it's dancing, evening dance classes?

If it's board games - a board game club

Etc etc

If what you meant was - where can I go to socialise where I feel less out of place/less pressure to be drunk - then the answer is a normal down to earth pub where people hold normal conversations, rather than a bar or a club which has a different tempo, and where you have to shout over the music to be heard. Somewhere like the Cobden View in Crookes where you can sit and read, play board games, have a conversation, listen to some folk music, watch the telly, play pool, sit in the garden. Of course - those would have to fit into your idea of fun!
