Depends on the car and engine. Some are great, some it won't really help.

Check the specifications of the clutch and flywheel, especially if it's a dual mass flywheel.

What age?

The earlier ones had issues with the DPF's clogging up, worse when mapped.

Post 2009ish they switched to a more modern engine which didn't have issues as long as it wasn't tuned by a total fool.

Had my three old model LR Disco's remapped over the years, just for a bit more grunt when towing our caravan.  No doubt it transformed them, much nicer to drive, less gear changing and a couple of miles more per gallon, what's not to like. And as a light remap no increase in the insurance premium either. 135hp to around 160hp.

I am no expert in the remapping scene, or in the knowledge of a car model that has 3 different HP ratings with the same engine, for instance 125hp or 150hp or the top of the range 180hp. Would it be too simplistic to think they are the same engine with a different  engine map? any one know the answer.

Totally depends on the model in question, sometimes it is, sometimes it is not.

Certainly could be.

I was reading about the engine in the F-Type V8 S and R.  75bhp difference and that is definitely just a mapping thing.

So did you declare your remap to your insurance and they didn't put up the premium?

Depending on the insurer the premium increase for a remap can be completely negligible but it varies from company to company.

Not something I'd recommend, but presumably it's difficult to detect without plugging a computer in and in most cases insurance companies wouldn't ever check for it.

Yes I certainly did, my insurers were Adrian Flux who specialise in 4 x 4 insurance and the more oddball type of vehicles.   https://www.adrianflux.co.uk/4x4/

They kindly sent me a revised insurance document listing the engine remap and underneath on the next line,

Cost £0.  They did not require any payment for making the changes either. They are a good company to deal with.
