Fitzalan square regeneration

Recommended Posts

Doesn’t look good if they’re giving out conflicting info - never said otherwise.

What do you think of the fitzalan sq proposals?

Sorry I did miss that.

Well each to their own.

People forget these were or ornamental trees - they weren’t planted to sustain the environment- they were just to look pretty.

The council aren’t chopping woodland down - they’re replacing ornamental trees.

That may be so, but when the same council are talking about how we badly need to improve the pollution level in the city centre - chopping down ANY healthy mature tree is not the way to go about it.

Personally its not the grubby look of the area that stopped me hanging around that part of town, its the pollution from the constant flow of buses. I don't see how redesigning the area is going to make a big enough difference to that.

They were nowhere in sight before Christmas around Hillsborough or Shirecliffe, very strange seeing how they are trying to keep the city green, well their half of the city that is.

They were protesting elsewhere. You can't criticize people for not being able to be in two places at once.

Perhaps the council should stop doing such unpopular things that they have to take their own councillors to court and use the police to interfere with legitimate protests then...

maybe if people werent breaking the law and putting themselves and others in danger then the council wouldnt have to, you can protest without moving fences hanging onto branches being fed into as chipper etc etc.

If they were moving fences its most likely because they have been protesting about Amey not using the correct brackets for holding the fences together. They have been using normal cable ties instead of proper fence ties or the metal brackets the fences were originally supplied with by the manufacturer.

Its not just about them felling trees that didn't need felling, its also about them not doing it to correct safety standards.

First of all, that's bobbins. Second, I don't think anyone knew Amey were going to hack the trees. Thirdly, are you admitting in your post that tree felling has a negative effect?

No one is against proper management of trees: pollarding is a decent compromise for very tall mature trees like that. I just hope they remember that trees are an asset, not a problem.

Plant suitably sized trees in appropriate places and then they wouldn't need to ve pollarded.

Obviously, but you can't just fell mature trees and plant saplings to replace them without impacting wildlife and air quality.

I believe SCC actually said these particular trees didn't need much work, they are only getting rid of them because one of them would need to be removed to do the refurbishment (due to potential damage to its roots) and SCC in their infinite wisdom felt that leaving only three trees would look silly due to being asymmetric. :loopy:

Honestly, you can't make this stuff up.

IMO keeping the three and planting smaller ones in the gap left from the missing tree would look BETTER. Obsessing over symmetry is insane, its not like they ever worry about that sort of thing when okaying new building developments or chopping down street trees.

That sounds like the sort of excuse a Paparazzi would use...

These are appropriately sized trees for the location. They are being felled, not pollarded.

So, are you saying the protesters actively chose to prioritise a different set of trees, so they must have considered these Fitzalan Square trees as less important?

(Considering STAG brag about having 9000 members, you'd have thought 1 or 2 could have been spared).

When was the last time you were in fitzalan square?
