Where were the tree huggers?

 

Oh yes, it doesn't affect them does it?

 

If it's not knocking money off their houses, they don't give a stuff.

 

The work today apparently is a heavy pruning / pollarding, though whether the trees are still condemned in the planned upgrade work for Fitzalan Square is unknown.

 

Many people - including "tree huggers" - have campaigned vigorously to save these particular trees, and signed the petition below. Have you done either of these?

That isn't the correct answer no.

 

As others have pointed out, so called 'tree huggers' have been in regular contact with the council regarding these particular trees, myself included.

 

Sheffield City Council are under the erroneous belief that trees with large canopies are inappropriate for city centre locations, despite best practice advising the exact opposite.

 

The also believe that just cutting down the tree that would be needed to be felled to allow the changes to the road layout they are proposed isn't feasible because it would leave the remaining trees asymmetrical..

It looks like a great scheme. Fitzalan Square has long been dingy, unloved and unused, apart from the habitual drinkers. Opening it up and brightening the area is a good idea, if it works.

 

There are squares in Leeds, London and Manchester that provide a nice spot for people to sit and have lunch. For Sheffield to have the same it will require more than cutting down trees and tidying up the area..this from a council that seems incapable of preventing 24hr booze outlets.

To be fair we do also have some nice public spaces - Millennium Square, Peace/Winter gardens, Devonshire Green etc with more to come like the Charter Square redevelopment and the like

It does look quite neat, though personally I'd have preferred something incorporating the existing trees.

Other European countries seem to manage to retain old Plane trees in their squares easily enough, which seems to maintain the character of the area, whilst still sprucing it up a bit.

 

I just hope they employ someone who understands how to plan and plant these new 11 trees, unlike some of the examples in this report;
