All the girls who are examined who weren't really at risk (and presumably examined on at least an annual basis until they're 18?) Are probably going to be troubled quite a bit.

Minor infringement ????????????????  just try and put yourself in a  young girls shoes. Having to lie down and and having the most intimate part of her body examined by a stranger.  Adult  women going for a smear test don't like it and some refuse it because of this. Go on, try to imagine it.

I don't have to imagine it, I've experienced such examination. Doctors/nurses are trained to perform the investigation sensitively.

I know - it's almost as if he's a bloke without a clue what girls and women's experiences are like.

Furthermore if a young woman is aware that consequent to such an examination family members could be imprisoned, that's only going to add to their fear and anxiety.

Yes to the first. As to the second, I asked you whether you were a teenage girl or a young woman and told you I'd always thought you were a bloke in his 50's or 60's. Perhaps you could clarify?

It IS a crime.  So you can stop repeating the idea that it isn't.

Am I missing something here, Is there an equally effective, less invasive deterent that I'm overlooking? I only see one solution to this problem, which is to physically examine vulnerable girls to ensure that the mutilation of these girls doesn't go undetected, and to also serve as a deterrent to parents, guardians or who ever is responsible for her.

You really do wonder where our society is heading when it's being suggested that pubescent girls should be forced to have their genitalia checked annually for their own protection.

Given the option, wouldn't women opt for a none invasive cervical screening procedure?  And given the option, wouldn't girls opt for the unpleasant and invasive examination rather than fearing the prospect of and suffering the agonising brutality of FGM?

So long as it is handled with care. It is only taking place among specific ethnic/cultural groups, so you focus on girls that belong to that ethnic/cultural group by using doctors and other specialists, preferably female, that also belong to that ethnic/cultural group.

 

Do you suggest just doing nothing?

I'm just as qualified in women's experiences as you are fella. 

 

Any other suggestions on how we protect these girls and deter anyone from performing the procedure on them?
